Floyd Patterson vs. Primo Carnera

I pick Carnera by a decision. Patterson would be outweighed to 70 or more pounds and he never showed well against bigger men. I don't think he can reach the rather fast Carnera often enough to outpoint him, and Carnera will keep him at the end of that long jab, and dominate him in the clinches.

 

I find this thread amazing ... Carnera was a third rater at best and some feel he beats a terrific fighter in Patterson ... very interesting !!!

 

Calling him a third rater is extreme.

He wasnt as good as Baer or even Sharkey but he was better than the likes of Lasky Leninsky who were ranked in the top five at the time.

His record against the top fighters of his era is prety good.

 

I essentially agree with your analysis. Patterson was the better fighter, and his superior speed and athleticism would have enabled him to beat down Carnera over ten rounds or so.

However Carnera could give Floyd some trouble because of his size advantage and moderate skills. Primo wasn't the complete bum that people make him out to be. He was a fairly competent fighter.

And yes, Carnera's booming uppercut could indeed level Floyd, much as it did to Sharkey. Sharkey had a much tougher chin than Paterson did. Thus, Floyd would have to play it safe during the early and middle rounds.

 

I would rank him higher than Sharkey. But then again, i never thought much of Sharkey anyway.

 

I rank him lower than Sharkey but I think that if Sharkey had his head screwed on he would have been a great great fighter.

I take that to mean that I rate Sharkey higher than most.

 

Patterson if he could move around a lot and avoid Carnera's murderous rght.

 

Carnera was not a bum because he had a heart as big as his frame ... however, Carnera was a man whose career was built on fixed fights and this is fact ... Floyd Patterson was a legitimate heavyweight champion with an equally large heart, exception speed and a killer left hook ... to put Carnera in there with Patterson would have been brutal.

 

210,230,260,way to much opinion goes to weight here sorry chris but do you think a 197 pound louis or 185 rocky or 190 dempsey,195 walcott ect. ect. ect. would have trouble with the 324 pound giant valuev or alot of the other 230 or more heavys of now. true floyd may not have beaten big heavys but it could just have something to do with the men and not there readout on the scale,i think if floyd performs at his peak level he takes carnera by late ko,but floyd gets dropped if he gets careless,i also believe bot fighters are often underrated
