Patterson soundly outboxed George Chuvalo who was a prototype of Ray Mercer, although I think that Mercer was better. But Mercer would be a dangerous opponent for Patterson.

I would favor Patterson to take a decision but Mercer would have a chance of pulling a Johansson

Patterson would make Mercer look like a plodding oaf and take a convincing points decision.

We're talking about a fighter who couldn't be trusted to show up or outsmart the likes of Jesse Ferguson and Marion Wilson when he wasn't in the mood. Even when he was and in his prime, guys like Jerry Jones got off the canvas multiple times to make it competitive.

    Patterson ain't no Jerry Jones.

He'd have to have Floyd completely and totally gas like a 4 round fighter before he had a change of catching up to him... And Floyd was a all time great, not a steroid infused club fighter with a left hook.

But you don’t think Mercer has a punchers chance as Ingo did ? Remember I favored Patterson to win

Oh he does, I think landing something big and then bum rushing Floyd is his only chance.

I agree with you completely, was just going off on a tangent about Mercer being way behind on points and literally doing nothing against Tommy until Tommy gassed out. I mean just shelling up until the storm passed worked against someone like Morrison but that wouldn't fly against a real champion caliber fighter and man like Floyd.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and suggest Floyd didn't beat anyone better than Mercer...in a head to head we surely take the best of both fighters, prime v prime? For me, the best Mercer was probably when he lost against Lewis and I think that Mercer beats the best Floyd. He'd have had zero respect for Floyd's power and he'd have been relentless behind his thudding jab before stopping a game Patterson somewhere after the 8th.

Patterson wins every second of every round until he doesn’t…
Not ruling out Patterson, but I don’t think he’s good enough of the backfoot to last the distance, I think Jimmy Ellis has a better chance against Mercer.

So a old and well past prime Floyd Patterson, against the new wave of bigger heavyweights a generation ahead of his own, managed to avoid getting knocked out by heavyweight punchers like Bonavena, Quarry 2x, and Chuvalo over 40 something rounds... But in his absolute prime a crude clubber with a good jab is going to knock his block off in short order every time out?

    Why? Because Liston did it?

If Ingemar did it why can't Mercer?

Ingo was a more skilled boxer then Mercer for starters, and certainly not a brute clubber like Mercer. More proficient at finding accurate kill shots then Merciless, who was more of a bludgeon you to death with brute force as opposed to a one hitter quitter KO artist.

And by does Floyd get a lot of flack for dropping a fight to Ingo and nearly killing him the next two times they fought. You'd think he never avenged that loss, none the less twice in devastating fashion.

Mercer was certainly big and strong enough and hit hard enough with an iron chin. I think Patterson would be too speedy for Mercer
