patterson - but he could get caught cold . lyles only chance is to come out and jump on him. if not, patterson wears him down then stops him probably late in the fight

Lyle couldn't even beat Quarry suggesting he has a shot with Liston makes little sense.

This is how I see it. Lyle would have to come out, guns blazing. The longer the fight lasts, the more it tips in Patterson's favor. However, Lyle has it in him to pull a Johannson on Patterson.

Oh these Lyle threads! :) A tough out in any era but be wasn't some 'iron chinned Adonis' for pete's sake. Quarry (IMO an overrated 'finisher' against top flight comp) hurt him. Ali, past prime stopped him and Ali doesn't compare with Liston's power...duh. The bell saved him against Shavers.
Sonny would come out using that ramrod jab and would control the fight early then?...here come the right bombs and left hooks and Ron would, indeed, start to fear Liston.
Lyle could land some big shots but Sonny's going nowhere.
Ron could well go further than the "Big Cat" but the result would be the same IMO.
Lyle decked, down, hurt, and unable to continue.

This would be a replay of either Liston vs Patterson fight.

Patterson got dropped in many fights but against the slower guys came out ok, he survived Bonavena, dropped by Quarry and heard the last bell. many felt he beat Ellis. I think Patterson matured and learned to relax after the Ingo and Liston losses but Floyd was always vulnerable to a decent puncher and dropped often. Floyd could win but a toss up

Liston finished two fights with,a broken jaw,[Marshall] ,a broken nose,[ Williams] ,and another with one eye completely shut,[Valdes],its time this bully myth was put to bed.

What's tough about shooting someone tho? Anyone can pull a trigger. Gang bangers do it all the time across the country, would they beat Liston?

I guess it's the mentality behind it. A lot of people don't have what it would take mentally to kill someone, at least in cold blood and those that do, usually are still dangerous without a gun.

In Lyle's defense, he did stand up to the bombs of Shavers and Foreman. Granted, he didn't have a Chuvalo or Mercer level chin, but he could take a punch.

Eras aside, of course, Floyd is not going to be intimidated against Lyle. Floyd might hit the floor but he gets up! Ron doesn't hit as hard as Sonny or Ingo's right. IMO if Ron didn't come out blazing (which he didn't do against most) Floyd could settle in for a stylistic performance. He COULD be tagged and Patterson would do that. Quarry hurt him (Patterson a more numbing puncher), Shavers had him out in the 2nd, thank god for the bell), Ali hurt him with less power then Patterson (see Ali-Floyd against Henry Cooper). Sorry but I'm taking Patterson in this one, outworking Lyle consistently, surviving a KD, in route to a UD or late stoppage; of course that would depend on Floyd's mind set going in but...he would not be intimidated by Ron.
