Floyd Patterson vs Smoking Joe Frazier in 1967.

I have to go with Joe here. Patterson was in decline while Frazier was already approaching world class status

 

Normally I would say that Frazier would knock out Patterson, but in 1967, I would have to say Floyd was still dangerous enough and Joe green enough that Joe wouldn't be able to knock Floyd out. I think if Floyd kept on the move and flurried here and there that he could make a close and competitive fight, maybe even a terrific fight. If Floyd opts head-to-head with Joe, he loses by a wide decision.

 

Prime or close to it Frazier destroys any version of Patterson. Just a bad style match-up for Patterson. Patterson had great hand speed possibly best in heavy history, but his foot speed wasn't extraordinary,it was Average at best, plus his lack of durability , and self doubt against aggressive, heavy punchers would spell disaster for Patterson with-in 5rds.

I'm not at all sure that a Frazier win here is automatic. Both had problems with Sluggers who hit hard. Both are, in general, described as Swarming in fighters. Floyd has faster hands but Joe hits a little harder. This match up in 1967 really needs to be thought through before giving a knee jerk pronouncement. This would be a very interesting fight, in that year, and has the potential of producing a very shocking result. I wouldn't bet the farm on this.

 

I agree. Patterson had the boxing ability to spring an upset. Although I would favor Frazier

 

So would I, but I'd avoid betting on the outcome.

 

Frazier by 13th round kayo. Be a good fight for 7 to 8 rounds though.

 

50-50 fight but gun to my head I'm going to go against the grain,and pick Patterson. Frazier was still fairly green, and hadn't yet quite mastered his defense, as seen when he was dropped by Bonavena twice.

Patterson had seen better days, but he still had a lot left in the tank as shown by his two bouts with Quarry that year and his fight with Ellis (both of whom I honestly thought Patterson deserved to be 3-0 against).

Too aggressive and relentless for Floyd

 

Even prime Floyd gets stopped in 11.

 

Interesting one. 1967 would have been a crossroads year for both of these guys fighting each other. 1965-66 Frazier would have been too green for Floyd whereas 1968 onwards Frazier would been too DANGEROUS for Floyd. In this scenario I would say that Floyd would do very well in the early rounds,avoiding most of the slower starting Smokin' Joe's advances and would have built up a lead on all cards by the end of the fourth or fifth. But once Joe realises that Floyd can't hurt him in spite of all this,he gets more and more confident and starts grinding his man down. By the time the the fight reaches the middle stanzas,the writing is on the wall and Joe stops Floyd by the ninth.

I think if Joe does everything right, and overwhelms Floyd with early aggression he is the favorite. But luckily Joe is more of a slow starter. So I think Patterson has a good chance to make his way into the fight, adapt and counter. So he potentially could outsmart and outbox Joe.
