Floyd Patterson vs Smoking Joe Frazier in 1967.

In 1965 Floyd Pattersom fought George Chuvalo in what was regarded as the fight of the year. Patterson himself said even though he wasn't knocked out or stopped that was one of his hardest fights. Joe Frazier was really emerging as a early profressional with a succession of knockouts and Patterson by 1967 may well have been on the decline. I wouldn't discount him totally against Frazier and his experience would make this potentially competitive but I would favour Frazier here if this match up happened any earlier I think Patterson would have more of chance for sure.

 

Yeah I am all for trying to push back against how poorly Floyd Patterson performs in mythical matchups here, but I just see Frazier getting to him tbh

 

Frazier would nail Patterson with his left hook at some point and that would be the beginning of the end.

 

Floyd's last hurrah was really against Quarry in underrated fights. It's a shame he had back problems but he had them even in 65 against Ali. Not saying he would beat Frazier especially not the peak one of 67-71 but it's still a significant hindrance. That style is just not built for longevity in general.

 

Frazier from Quarry I to FOTC was pretty much at or (or in the case of FOTC) beyond prime Liston...and that's saying a WHOLE lot, being that Liston was an easy top 7 h2h.

Floyd would combust from Smoke inhalation.

 

I would pick Frazier but it would be competitive and might go the distance. I will refer to the OP, “Frazier in 1967.” Flame away if you will but I can’t help but think people who are crowing “Smoke will do this or do that” are at least subliminally thinking about the destruction machine of March 8, 1971, instead of the raw unpolished undeveloped gem of 1967.

 

Could very easily turn out this way although I would still take Frazier.

Patterson is eternally underrated here, probably because of the Liston fights. But I’ll go there … IMO absolute peak Liston (emphasis on absolute peak) does a Jamaica on every version of Frazier including FOTC 8 of 10 times, even though I have Frazier higher than Liston on my ATG list, because of the stylistic matchup.

I see Floyd winning a few of the early rounds but Joe comes on strong the later it goes.
Think Joe stops around the ninth round mark.
