How would Floyd Patterson score against these boxers: 1: Jack Dempsey 2: Gene Tunney 3: Jack Sharkey 4: Max Schemling 5: Primo Carnera 6: Tommy Loughran 7: James Braddock 8: Max Baer 9: Tony Galento 10: Arturo Godoy
I’d favour him over everyone except Dempsey, Tunney and Schmeling. I think he was too fast for Carnera and would do a job on him. Baer is a problem because of his size and chin, but he lost to worse fighters than Patterson and as long as he doesn’t nail Floyd I think Patterson would outwork him.
Dempsey, Max Baer, Schmeling I would maybe favor. I'd make Dempsey a clear favorite. Max Baer is bigger and stronger and more durable than Johansson, but Johansson is more skilled than Baer. Nevertheless, I make Baer a favorite over Patterson if Baer is serious. But I don't favor him as much as Dempsey. Schmeling Id make a slight favor but ask me on another day, I might favor Patterson. Carnera is a wild car because of his size and strength.
1: Jack Dempsey. ko loss 2: Gene Tunney. Pts loss 3: Jack Sharkey. tie 4: Max Schemling. ko loss 5: Primo Carnera. Pts win 6: Tommy Loughran. Pts win 7: James Braddock. Pts win 8: Max Baer. Awful loss. 9: Tony Galento. Goofy ko loss. Tony is big, forward moving and durable, Floyd gets mauled in close range. 10: Arturo Godoy. Pts win Final record 4-1-5, could overturn the Galento loss if he boxes carefully and has a stickler referee.
Loses to Dempsey, Tunney, Schmeling and Baer but beats the rest. Maybe Sharkey on his best night pulls something off tho
Loughran has the wrong style to fight Patterson, Floyd wins that one. Don't know anything about Godoy. I figure Braddock gives him a very tough fight, a very close fight, I should say. Carnera is a toss up, though i favor Carnera without much confidence. Galento, you have a guy that liked to leap in with left hooks against a guy with a better chin that was known for his left hook. However that fight goes, it will be one sided. The rest beat Patterson. Floyd wasn't all that good. His career has gained traction because Cus trained Tyson. And Cus matched him very well and very protectively. You can make a case that his success had more to do with Cus's matchmaking skills than it does with Patterson's talent. Patterson was one of the weaker champions before the alphabet era and he is a long way short of being great.
Patterson was not a great champion in the usual sense. Many of the other heavyweight champions from history until the present day would have been favored to beat him. Against some, for example Lennox Lewis, Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson, Floyd would've stood no chance. But if you compare Patterson to all the heavyweight champions in history of his approximate weight, he's probably Top 5 along with Dempsey, Tunney, Charles and Marciano.
1: Jack Dempsey... Best of Jack wins via KO 2: Gene Tunney... Patterson absolutely destroys Tunney. Gene finds out what fast really is. 3: Jack Sharkey... Patterson via KO 4: Max Schemling... Patterson via KO 5: Primo Carnera... Patterson via wide decision 6: Tommy Loughran... Patterson via wide decision 7: James Braddock.... Patterson via KO 8: Max Baer... tricky... Patterson to be favored by a 20% chance that things take a turn for the very bad. 9: Tony Galento... Patterson via stoppage 10: Arturo Godoy... Patterson via wide decision
Its funny because I actually think Dempsey v Patterson would have been an incredible fight and not the blow out everyone assumes it would be. Jack could knock down a house...if the house stood still long enough. The very best version of Floyd was blazing quick and very elusive and I'm not sure Dempsey chins him.
Hi Buddy. Sorry, don't think Patterson beats Tunney, as for fighting a fast fighter, Gene fought the fastest fighter ever, 5 times over dozens of rounds, Floyd would be slow by comparsion. Mike.
Nw he can finally give Louis some much needed competition. A little small around the upper body, arms and shoulders. Has no chance with Dempsey
Yes, but that guy was was not a heavyweight and didn't hit with a lot of clout even for a middleweight. And it could be argued Gene lost 3 of those fights, to boot. Patterson is in the argument as the fastest heavy ever. And that left hook was pure dynamite. At the end of the day, Tunney's heavyweight resume is just too weak. A handful of name guys on their last legs and that was it. And a real aversion to facing black fighters. Perhaps he knew something in that respect.
Hi Buddy. You make a valid point re: Greb, as to Tunney having a weak resume at heavyweight, I would counter that by saying Pattersons resume as champ leaves a lot to be desired,Roy Harris, Pete Rademacher, Brian London, and Tom McNeeley, add to this he was on the canvas 16 times during his reign, against " weak " opposition, but who knows in reality who would win. stay safe. Mike.
