Say Patterson defends his title against these men: Michael Moorer Dwight Qawi Eddie Muhammad Matthew Franklin Muhammad John Conteh Jimmy Bivins Donny Lalonde Remember, these men could have fought at heavyweight in the late 50s. Moorer and Qawi did fight at heavy in the 90s, but we'll use the 190 lbs version of Qawi. Bivins fought at light heavyweight and heavyweight in his time. If Patterson defended vs these men in the late 50s, could one of them have gotten to Patterson before Ingo did?
If we’re permitting Michael Moorer to show up in his heavyweight rendition then I’d favor him to beat Patterson. Jimmy Bivens is a potentially hard fight. Paterson is a clear favorite over the rest for me
I think he beats all of them, except Qawi and maybe Moorer. The reason is that I think those are bad style matchups for him, Patterson isn’t the best at using his reach because he moved up to heavyweight and had to deal with taller men, so he’d have to fight in mid range or in close. The only way he can use the jab is to set up combinations, he can’t stay behind it, so he’d have no choice but to fight in mid-close range against Qawi, where I think he gets beat to the punches, since Qawi has shorter arms and also is a bit slicker and a better counter puncher, I feel he has more variety in close, more ways of setting up punches and baiting, he can move his body to set up different attacks, he can show the shoulder, get down to his right to get Patterson to commit so he can deflect off of the shoulder and counter then evade the counters from Patterson, I feel he’d be a step ahead of Patterson up close since he has more variety there. Patterson had quick hands, but he didn’t have as many tricks up his sleeve up close as Qawi, I feel Patterson height and reach would actually work against him given the styles. As for Moorer, I feel Patterson’s main weapon was the leaping left hook which would be dangerous against a hard punching southpaw like Moorer who can counterpunch, Moorer could stick the right hand lead out whilst ducking under Patterson’s left hook then come with his own left hand counter, he could even check right hook to time Patterson’s own lead hook whilst he (Moorer) pulls away. I feel Patterson could win this at 175lbs if he applies more educated pressure or even just looks to get in and out, close fight that one. Matthew Saad Muhammad is obviously a dangerous fight, but Patterson should win either on points or late stoppage if he just boxes cautiously by looking to get in and out, hook off the jab, evade the counters. Counter Saad over the jab etc, I know Patterson wasn’t the best at range, but he could box somewhat like how Morrison boxed against Foreman, obviously he wouldn’t need to go to that extent, but I mean he could box using similar tools. All predictions are based on the idea that Patterson, in his prime, could get down to 175lbs and maintain performance, which I have no doubt that he could, rather than the green version that actually fought at 175lbs.
