I never really see anything about this guy. How would he do on his best night against Holmes, Frazier, Tyson, Young George Foreman, John Tate, etc, etc. He seems like an extremely special champ to have around. Sometimes he'd enter a title fight close to 180 lbs than 200lbs. Just seems like a very unique fighter in the heavyweight division.
Yeh king of the world is good as its got a good few chapters on liston vs patterson at the start to kinda set up the rest of the book. Im no expert on either liston or patterson but i get the impression he was a very well thought of fighter by white people and black people of the times and liston was made out to be the bad guy. But when patterson got dominated twice by liston i think he kinda got lost in history to the casual boxing fans. I reckon someone who really knows boxing inside out (which isnt me lol) would probably really appreciate this fighter. Also i think his personality stoped him getting really famous as hed go into deep depressive states and hide himself away.
Floyd Patterson fought Ingemar Johanssen, and was beat the first time. In the second fight he came back and knocked the swedish boxer out. He was known as the boxing gentleman, because he was one of the nicest guys to ever grace the sport. Patterson won the vacated belt by beating Archie Moore. The belt was vacated by the one and only Rocky Marciano. Patterson was beat twice by Liston and Ali, being beat by them put him in their shadow which is why he is not as well known. He died just last year. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame, I forgot what year though.
How many other countless boxers are forgotten or not as well remembered , for such a punishing sport we fans should really put more effort in to remembering more than the big names
Patterson's accomplishments in the ring were/are overshadowed by the fact that he was KO'd by Liston twice. As well as his two losses to Ali. He's almost been reduced to a footnote in other fighters' careers. What a shame.
Patterson once said after knocking out a man. "I just hit them as hard as I can and let Jesus do the rest." ROFL
Patterson was a very good fighter, Just small. He would have been a Great Cruiserweight Champion and would be a handfull for some of the smaller heavyweight champions because of his great speed and powerful, leaping left hook.
patterson hasn't really been forgotten he is still a well respected name.he started out his pro career fighting at around 165/166 ponds and had been olympic middleweight champion.in '56 after he won the title and into the late fifties there were much bigger and dangerous contenders around like liston, williams and folley and it's perceived that cus d'amato his manager was keeping floyd away from them. instead they thought they'd taken an easier option fighting the swede ingemar johansson the first fight floyd was decked seven times when being ko'd but subsequently showed his heart by coming back and ko'ing the swede twice.his two 1st round losses to liston plus the 1st johansson fight lose hime credibility as a great heavyweight champion, but ironically he regained a lot of it as a fighter with his performances against guys like ellis, bonavena and quarry after losing the title.they say floyd patterson had a glass chin, but they could never accuse him of having a glass heart.still one of my favourite all time fighters.
No, Patterson was greatly respected, and had nothing to be ashamed of in either defeat to Ali. And to rebuild his career as well as he did after the Liston fights is to his credit as well. Patterson would seemed to of been a nice man outside the ring, and it was such a shame he had to suffer that horrible illness before he died.
