I heard that he thought of this change as disgraceful and basically entirely negative. Anyone got any backstory on this?

Google "In Defense of Cassius Clay" in Esquire.
Liston asks the most important question of all. "How'd you get my phone number?"

If it was negative, he sure did pay for it.

“He was very polite and gentle throughout the evening, and when he said good-bye I called him Cassius—I never call him by his Muslim name, Muhammad Ali—and then I added, "It's all right if I call you Cassius, isn't it?" He smiled and said, "Any time, Floyd."
This is really interesting… before this Floyd had just discussed how Ali suggested a publicity run with himself Patterson and Liston. Makes me wonder if he said that purely to up the chances of that or if it was genuine…

Floyd went farther than that. He said he was going to beat Ali and bring the title back to America, saying Ali (who like Floyd won gold for the U.S. in the Olympics) wasn’t a real American.

He had problems with Ali’s religion yet was a lifelong Catholic who never called out his own church for sexual abuse, being a haven for pedo priests who just got shifted to new places to find fresh new victims when they were found out, and plenty of this was uncovered during Floyd’s lifetime.

Not that I am in any way a defender of Christianity or any religion (as my record here will attest), but there is a distinction to be made between what went on in the Church & a religion where the open worship of a child molester is your example of a moral compass.

I’m missing the part where I gave any such example of a moral compass.

Not saying you did, just that I don’t think Patterson being critical of Islam is undermined by his Christian identity. At least, not fatally. One is perceptibly worse than the other.

Look up the Crusades and the Inquisition for starters, if I’m understanding you correctly.

I was talking about the teaching of the faiths, what they believe, & how they shape society. But if hundreds of years ago still matters to you, we can talk about why the Crusades & Inquisition happened in the first place.

I think you’d find that more people have been killed in the name of Christianity than any other religion (or probably any other reason) in all of history. Actions speak louder than words — what they ‘teach’ means nothing compared to what they ‘do’ (sanctioned genocide, systematic coverup of pedos, etc).

But I’m going to leave it at that. This thread is fraught with land mines that are going to lead to it being shut down or people getting banned because it basically invites a wide discussion of religion — which belongs on the Lounge if anywhere — because Floyd’s problems with Ali were based on his faith/belief system.

I just wish Patterson had been wise and courageous enough to look at his own church as critically as he did with his perception of Ali’s beliefs.

In the land of the free and the home of the brave we get to choose what religion we practice or none at all.
