How do you rate Patterson as a puncher? I have been watching a lot of his fights lately, and was surprised to see him rock Quarry and Chuvalo; of course he starched Cooper. On a scale of 1-10, how do rate his power?

His speed probably brought his power to about 1.5 Pattersons, to those on the business end!

The gazelle punch when hit with full leverage is enough to take out just about anybody.

Floyd hit pretty damned hard, actually. His power was magnified by his incredible hand speed. In two fights, Ali couldn't deck Henry Cooper, and Floyd squashed the Brit....also he decked Quarry, which Ali wasn't able to do.

At his best Patterson could create maximum impact with a single shot and by maximum impact I mean as hard as anyone can hit. He produced serious concussions with a single blow. So yes, with a single well timed blow he got the job done with a single punch as well as anyone. But he had to create that moment.

The down side is this does not equate as having heavy hands with all his punching because he had to set it up, generate that power using timing, leverage and technique. He would have to orchestrate that moment of connection.

Patterson was fast enough to hit a man blind and that also contributed to his power. The majority of the time he was just a very good boxer with regular sharp punch power for a man of his size.

That's fair enough, Choklab. I was just a bit surprised to see Floyd jolting Quarry and Chuvalo with single shots. I also remember Henry Cooper saying Patterson was a much harder puncher than Ali, although this was after Floyd had "created that moment"!

Well isn't that what the name of the game is all about?? To create maximum effect when throwing your best shots??

I think his power at HW is overrated by some and I'm seeing that again here. In P4P sense he did have good power though.

Of course it is but we should differentiate between the type of punching power. I am a great believer of a knock out punch being a knockout punch. How good you are at landing it, what percentage are hurtful against each talent level of fighter is another matter.

The better puncher is the guy who can knock out better fighters who are harder to hit. Patterson meets that criteria but possibly not with percentage of hurtful, dangerous punches. Joe Frazier had a lot of salt on most of his shots. A guy like Foreman seemed to hurt with half the leverage. Both guys knocked guys out. It's how you differentiate the level and quantity of power.

Floyd had expert power. Selective power. Others had raw natural power. Consistent power if you like.

But is there a difference?? Or is it a case of Patterson being much quicker than Foreman?? The outcome is the same... A fist hits a head and a knockout happens..
