Loudon, From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I appreciate today's boxers over yesteryear. Boxing is a combination of skill and art, but I can't see why boxing's overall skill-set would not improve through osmosis. Basketball, football, soccer, baseball, track & field, have all gotten (statistically) over time. These are sports that require a lot of skill. That is my position, based on hypothesis. I will have to do a bit of research to determine it there is merit to it.
I mean, nothin against SRR, i don't really know a great deal about him, nor do i claim to. But who were these guys he was fighting? World champs? bums? journeymen, heck any of the great fighters cud rack up a record like that fightin nobodys every week (i'm not saying he did but i can't imagine, in them days there were athletes like todays era...) They were men who trained to fight because they had to, to survive, some probably just took the beating for the payday)
Stop trying convince people that the sport has evolved when : Boxers of today are not as conditioned as their predecessors.. Most of them can't even fight for a full round .. All the great trainers are gone thus effecting the quality of fighters ! Boxers of today aren't as mentally tough ,just look at how many fighters quit after 1 loss! Boxers of today also don't fight enough to perfect their craft! Boxing techniques have evolved ,yeah Ok ..How good is the foot work of Haye,Pascal and Berto? Boxing has evolved atsch And Srr may not have fought as much but best believe he wouldn't be fighting once a year !
People are just stupid, even if fighters wanted to fight more, promoters wouldn't allow it because they need time to build events, which = more money. If anyone believes any of the old era would fight 100+ times they're stupid.
Sure sure I mean the man had over 100 fights maybe he just loved to fight because he wanted prove he was the best and would have taken on all comers ! Funny how people can speak for certain fighters and how active they would be all because one guy gets paid so much to fight part time !:think
Name me all the top fighters are fight more than twice a year? And Robinson stated that he didn't even like boxing and only did it for the money. He only came out of retirement for monetary purposes. So considering, most of today's top fighters fight twice a year, and considering Robinson admittedly was motivated mostly by money, I think it's a good bet that he wouldn't be fighting more than twice a year assuming he would be one of the highest paid fighters in the sport as he was during his fighting days.
They don't fight more than twice a year .Thats the problem..I remember Oscar had fought 5 times in 1 yr ..SRR took me as the type that even though he disliked boxing he would have taken as many fights as he could no matter the purses .
I respect your opinion. But there's nothing whatever to suggest that fighters today are better as a whole, and skills have improved. I happen to think some skills aren't as common as they once were. Body punching and in fighting etc. If skills had definitely evolved as a whole, then today's guys would be the best fighters that we've ever seen, across all divisions. But to anyone who's watched boxing for a number of years, this is clearly not the case. Again, today's best guys across all weight classes, would get beaten by the majority of their predecessors in my honest opinion. Sports science, nutrition, and training equipment and facilities can only take someone so far.
Nobody believes that. But someone as talented as Ray Robinson, may even have been better in today's era, with less miles on the clock. But it's hard to say. The environment and the circumstances that you're brought up in, shape your life.
SRR was a notoriously tough negotiator. He was known to cancel fights the day of the fight if he didn't get what he wanted money wise. So I highly doubt he would take as many fights as possible no matter the purses. As far as Oscar goes, once be hit his mid 20's, he fought more than twice in a year once. He never fought more than twice in a year from 2000 on. That's the way the sport is these days. Almost all the recent comes from TV.
Agreed but boxers need to stay active to refine that craft ..Floyd can get away with it because he is seasoned vet ,same with Hopkins ...
