HBO's Ross Greenburg: Talks to begin next week for Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao, center, poses with his trainer Freddie Roach, right, and promoter Bob Aurm after defeating Miguel Cotto on Saturday night.

LAS VEGAS -- Manny Pacquiao established himself so firmly as the obvious next fight for Floyd Mayweather that even a promotional representative for the Grand Rapids native apparently told a top HBO official late Saturday night that talks would begin this week.

Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports, said he received a call from Richard Schaefer to announce the Golden Boy Promotions CEO would initiate talks Monday with Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter.

Arum -- citing the possible pay-per-view bonanza to be announced later this week, which could have a profound effect on negotiations after Pacquiao’s 12th-round technical knockout of Miguel Cotto -- said “if Richard’s going to call me, let him wait and call me on Wednesday instead of calling me Monday.”

“Manny is open to fight everybody,” Arum said. “Not going to put up with any nonsense. Not going to put up with any trash talk in making the fight. Not going to negotiate the fight in the newspapers. If Floyd Mayweather wants to fight Manny Pacquiao, he knows who to call, period. No baloney. No ‘I hate him, he hates me.’ That doesn’t matter. If he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao, let him call me.”

Greenburg said he received that feeler call from Schaefer just minutes after Arum’s statement, which came less than an hour after Pacquiao’s victory.

“He told me point blank that Bob Arum will be getting that call on Monday and he plans to come in and meet with Bob next week to make the Mayweather fight,” Greenburg said.

Greenburg added that he believes the fight must be made.

“I think both sides need to sit down, put aside everything, hash it out and see the big picture -- and the big picture is a boatload of cash and a fight that needs to be made right now," Greenburg said.

At least one person affiliated with Mayweather, though not officially part of the fight camp, said he wouldn’t make a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. said he continues to suspect Pacquiao’s achievements as a welterweight are the product of performance-enhancing drugs.

Lol absolutely no proof but just scared out of their mind. If Mayweather's own father thinks Pac is that much better I don't understand what some of these PBF fans are seeing.

Don't be a *****. I'm not accusing him I'm just saying be honest with yourself, would you be shocked if Pac was busted tommorow using PED's?

I love Pac and think he's an exceptional athlete clean or dirty but if your objective you have to admit that with what we saw saturday night it's not crazy to think he's juicing. I can understand people being suspicious.
