Joe Calzaghe had a pair of running shoes and a medicine ball.

Have you seen a fitter fighter?

What's funny is that chopping wood is an old-school tactic.

In any case it's obvious Floyd doesn't need to change anything. There's a certain savvy and ability to anticipate for fighters that don't exercise in many ways other than boxing. Practically all Chavez Sr. did was run and spar. Toney was big on simply sparring and boxing. Floyd probably doesn't do much else besides simple strength workouts that don't involve the mechanics of punching. Shadow-boxing, jump rope, mitt-work, sparring. All three of those fighters have uncanny awareness and anticipation in the ring. The focus on the craft pays off.

    What would you implement?

I give you three amateur stand outs, do you go new school (It's not that new anymore) or do you revert?

Whatever works! Floyd is operating at the sports highest level so if he doesn't need a conditioning coach, so be it! But other top fighters do well with a new school approach...if it works for them....So be it.

    Indeed.
And you know how Marvin did it?
Old school work at high intensity for 3 mins on and a min off.
I'll bet he could go 12 rounds with anyone using new methods in his prime and just be getting warmed up for the old. "Championship" rounds.

I can't link because I'm on phone but there's a thread somewhere in the Training forum about Marvin and his methods with a great article on how he did it.

I've always believed in interval training (3 minutes obviously, high intensity, one minute recovery) and just fundamental things like Road work (much more important than people realise, due to the mental benefits) and I'm not that big a fan of weight lifting, I prefer strength building exercises which improve natural fluidity.

Guys like Berto come in ripped to the teeth, and it does them no good what so ever. There should be no excess on your body. AKA nothing there that doesn't need to be.

You mean a bit like Carl Froch?
Too many guys are fighting outwith their optimum weight, hence all this S&C stuff being more important now.
If more fighters could afford or were able to fight at their optimum weight, a few of these guys would be out of a job and working in places like LA Fitness

:good The body goes through no un-necessary strain to make weight. Just condition yourself, and stay at or around that weight period the whole time.

There's a MMA fighter named Frankie Edgar who did the same thing, and had great success.

What a load of ****!!! Old School ???? Ali, Marciano and Louis would go into training camp chop wood, shovel and use Hammers to break rocks! Now condition coaches claim they have invented some sort of "NEW " training. Both sides of the argument are full of ****. Floyd sr, Roger are just a pair of Whining dick heads.
I exclude Jeff from the above.

A combination of things here. First of all, FLoyd stays active. He takes care of his body and puts in work even when he is not fighting. The other part is just natural. Mayweather has a great metabolism. The dude doesn't gain weight easily. He is the type that can eat what he want's but can burn the calories QUICK! May is the type of cat that probably wont ever get fat. Unless something dramatic happens where he eats like a whale. Cotto for example, is the complete opposite of May. Cotto needs to be on a strict diet since his metabolism is slow. FLoyd is 36 years of age but has a metabolism of a 20 year old. all this makes it easier for May to stay in great condition. It's not a struggle for him.

Floyds no old school fighter. Old school fighters arent safety first / cherry pickers!
