I see a lot of people comparing Floyd to Marquez because they are both "Counter Punchers". And I don't think it's and Apples to Apples comparison. Are there things Marquez did against Pac, that Floyd cannot? Is Marquez a more effective counter puncher against a fighter like Manny, than Floyd is? Marquez has had ALOT of rounds to figure Manny out, first of all. And he's been dropped a lot of times in the process. The main differences, for me, between Floyd's style and Marquez's style are: 1. Marquez is a counter puncher, but he is an offensive minded counter puncher. If you watch his fights with Manny, he is backing up slightly constantly (at angles), baiting Manny in, but he always has his finger on the trigger and most of his reactive moves are forwards. This means when he counters, he is still in an attacking position to thrown another. Where as Floyd is the opposite, when he is looking to counter, he is more often than not in a defensive motion looking to either check hook as he's escaping or countering with his right, then quickly ducking under and out to retreat and reset. 2. Marquez after countering or getting hit, threw WITH Manny. He sat his @ss in the pocket and was willing to take a shot to land his 3 punch combination. As stated above, Floyd does not do this. When he is in the pocket, he's defensive minded and looking to roll and counter....not attack with a combination.
lol jmm was dropped by guys like katsidis and juan diaz stop floyd does everything jmm does 10x better pacquiao is going ot get beat up in 3 days...stoppage.
The difference is JMM has a rock of a hand while Floyd has soft brittle hands. It's almost as soft as Charmin. I can see Pac taking Floyd shots with no problem.
People forcing the point of "Marquez had a bunch of fights to figure Manny out" is dumb. He had success in the first fight, and he should have won the 3rd fight when Manny wasn't fighting the same as he was back then. They're different counter punchers, Marquez likes to throw in the middle of a combination, Mayweather likes to throw when you make a movement to throw a punch, preempting your shot with his own. The difference here is obviously that Mayweather can also counter in the middle of a combo, he just has to throw which contradicts his approach, Marquez can't preemptively stop a combo with his own offense.
marquez varies his attacks while floyd relies on his speed and defense. they have different mentality on how to win. look at the damages they inflict after their bouts. one is often more content on just scoring points to win since he lacks power and it's his fighting style while the other has a killer instinct.
A tool from Marquez skillset that I liked was that long looping left hook which he had a lot of success with against pacman. He used to add it on the end of most combinations and it landed fairly often and with decent power too. Not sure if I can remember seeing mayweather throw such a long left hook, he seems to favour the short ones
The "JMM has had a lot of rounds to figure Manny out" argument has no basis in reality - when JMM outboxed Pac for basically the majority of their first fight. There isn't anything Marquez does which Floyd doesn't or can't do better. Ally that with the fact Mayweather is quicker, stronger, bigger, has greater reach and has more ring IQ.
Marquez himself considers Mayweather a more effective counter-puncher than himself, as well as vastly superior defensively. (direct quotes; Marquez is a humble & intelligent guy and KSAB)
