With their eyes on megasuperstardom and all that jazz, it's a fight they didn't want, I agree. Can it be argued that 'Floyd would've beaten him anyway'? Sure it can. But that doesn't mean that Floyd didn't avoid him. He did.
That's always been the crux of my Mayweather/Magarito debacle argument. Could Floyd have beaten Margarito? Sure. Would he have been favored? Yes. Is Margarito a live dog? Yes. Buuuut.... here's the thing. Did Mayweather flat avoid Margarito? He absolutely did.
Guess we;ll just have to agree to disagree on this I seem to sense you are a little naïve on the corruption in boxing though
I meant to post...after reading Navigators account (with pics and details). I could see where you are coming from. Definitely makes me think a little more.
I disagree. Toney's size would allow him to walk through virtually anything Floyd threw (Of course, attrition could set in). But his volume, IMO, would keep floyd from getting in his comfort zone. I believe he would eventually have to throw more and therefore, put his defense a little on the backburner. Anyway, fight should have happened.
Just to clarify, I don't share C.J.'s contention that Floyd or GBP had anything to do with the suspension of Margarito, just that the suspension was a bureaucratic nonsense and that there's never been a shred of proof that Margarito had plaster in his gloves (nor any proof that plaster would be of any practical assistance in winning a boxing match, for which there is only evidence to the contrary).
He fought Baldomir simply because Baldomir was the champion and had the belts. Simple equation really and got more money than he was offered for Margarito fight. Only fools would think Margarito with his limited skills and lack of speed would have a chance. God knows Mayweather beat much better fight than Margarito. Hell he beat guys who dominated Margarito the cheat.
Baldomir was the worst Linear Champion the WW division has ever seen. Floyd avoided Margarito because he got paid a $1 more to face Baldomir. There was build up and tension there already for promotions. Floyd took the waay easier route to a title.
Any boxer in pbfs position would fight baldo he was the champ and a bigger payday. You cant criticize pbf for doing something every other boxer would do.
Sure, any boxer who wanted the much easier fight. You posters think being linear trumps any other title. Doesn't work that way. Not anymore, and hasn't been the case of ages. At least w/ Margarito, he defended his title successfully. And against more top ten opponents at the time then both Judah and Badlomir combined.
Newsflash! Lineal championships and higher purses appeal to fighters, this isnt some sort of revalation. You're ctiticizing pbf for doing what any other boxer would do. Hell margo would have done the same thing by fighting baldo if given the chance. Pbf fighting margo does nothing for his resume anyway atleast baldo was the champ while margo is a disgraced cheat who never beat anyone after being exposed.
Lol...this video is funny but clearly biased. Floyd wasn’t scared Of Margarito. He wasn’t looking over his shoulder out of fear Antonio was around, listening to his interview. He was just inattentive and distracted....not really engaged. Margarito at that time was not a better option than a DLH. He was a risk, but so was DLH and that was where the money was.
