Now that the title will be vacated, is the winner of Cotto/Margarito awarded the title being that Cotto is ranked #1 and Tony is #5? If not then how is it determined who gets to fight for the title?
#1 must beat #2 or #3 (under special circumstances) to win the vacated title. Cotto has already beaten #2 and #3 though...Mosley and Quintana. Williams will move up to #3, so he MAY be able to fight him to fill the vacancy. Its possible he may have to fight Mosley again to fill the vacancy. This could get a bit messy.
Yeah, but they have already fought. I expect to see a special circumstance clause enacted since Williams will be #3 and Cotto #1.
Quintana wasnt ranked #3 until after he beat Williams in the first fight, and beatting Shane didnt really count since Floyd was the reigning champ. According to the Rules of the Ring belt He shouldnt become the Champ, HOWEVER as you alluded to I think that a body of work should make Cotto the Ring champ.:good
I'm not saying they should just give him the title. I am saying that the "special circumstances" clause they have that allows #1 to face #3 to fight to fill the vacancy may be enacted if Cotto and Williams fight since the #2 fighter already lost to Cotto. Quintana is currently #3, but Williams will take that spot (he is #4)
Don't matter Wladimir already beat Samuel and the belt is still vacant. Although I wondered How Calzalge got the belt after the Hopkins fight if he was not even ranked at Light heavy by the ring??? So much for 1 having to face 2 or 3.
Damm if cotto defeat margo and is not awarded the ring belt, damm what a joke, cotto already fought Mosley Quintana Judah all the top ranked fighter, he don't need to fight Willimas for that belt.
. I am not saying HAND the title to Cotto. There is a special clause that allows #1 vs #3 under certain circumstances. Wlad beat Peter before Peter was #2, and since Wlad has become #1, he has not faced #2 or #3. He would need to at least fight #3 to see if Ring will enact the special circumstances clause, which they may, since he already beat the current #2. In Cotto's case, I am saying they may let him face #3 Williams (assuming Cotto beats Margo) and enact the special circumstances since he already beat #2. As for Hopkins-Calzaghe.....Hopkins was already Ring LHW champion. So when Calzaghe beat him at LHW, he took the title. Nothing unusual about that.
Here are the current rankings: CHAMP: Mayweather 1. Cotto 2. Mosley 3. Quintana 4. Williams 5. Margarito *Mayweather retired which makes the title vacant. *Cotto, by default, stays at #1. *Mosley is coming off a loss to Cotto. His fight with Judah was cancelled, not to mention his wife/manager stonewalled a proposal to push it to a later date, so he can neither go up nor down. *Quintana lost to Williams in 1 round so he will plummet from the Top 5. *Williams will most likely rise to #2 after blasting Quintana. *Margarito is coming off a win over Cintron. If he beats Cotto, he will without a doubt take over the #1 spot since he will have 2 belts and a win over the #1 guy in the division. But it won't be enough to take the Ring belt, because only the #1 and #2 (and in some shady cases, #3) can fight for a vacant belt. Therefore, it will take the winner of Cotto-Margarito and Williams to take over the Ring belt at welterweight.
Correct. But I think they will because unlike Mosley, Williams has never lost to Cotto, and is coming off a 1 round destruction of another guy Cotto beat. Williams has to be #2 based on that argument.
