Pong? Naito? Really? Pong was a good fighter, but far from top 10 status the way I saw it. And Naito? :patsch

I was going to actually put Pong in as my number 10...but it looks like already he is assured a spot, so I thought I might put a dark horse to round out my list.

I weighed up a few names Harada, Accavello, Ebihara, Chionoi even Kingpetch and Toosharp...but I settled on a guy who often gets overlooked and really had a very good resume even though he was cut down in his prime.

I do think that is a little unrealistic but I dont think its a bad idea...you can start muddle the debate a bit when you compare eras to much. I do agree a fighter can only beat who is there to be beaten, you cant hold it against him to much if you feel those fighters werent much chop.

But compare Pong's record to a guy like Canto for instance...Not to many missing from Miguel's resume, a hell of a lot from Pong's.
Obviously he fought Oguma and Gonzalez multiple times but that had a lot to do with both continuing to emerge as the top contenders for Canto's title.
Even when guys like Espadas and Lopez held titles, and looked like viable challengers, Bet and Shoji generally found a way to push them aside...usually by beating them or others.

Pong has some glaring omissions on his record..Arce, Darchinyan, Donaire, Naveraz, Parra, Sakata, Pachecho and maybe a couple of others..and really a lot of the fighters that replaced them were fairly average, which ever way you look at it.
He defended his title a lot of times, so you would expect some average fighters to slip in there...but when they take up majority of your resume and quite often werent even in the top 10, then you have to put those wins into context.

Now I dont blame Pong for not fighting those guys...its the way of the game these days but I think its unfair to guys who have come out on top of their eras by beating the best available, to say Pong is greater then them because he stayed unbeaten for so long just isnt fair on them. Ive personally always prefered quality over quantity.

So even if you try to keep eras on a level playing field...its not much good if a fighter cant distinguish himself as clearly the best of that time by beating all other guys around.
For the record I think Pong is the best of his era and would have likely beaten all others who could have challenged that claim..but alas he didnt.

I definitely think that everyone has convinced me on naito, and i am thinking about dropping Pong down the list, but i think i will probably keep him there. I am not sure who i will bring into the mix here.

Canto above Jimmy Wilde is a big call. I am thinking about elevating Canto, but i cant see him going that high.

Yeah I expect that...its against the grain a bit. But Wilde will be the number 1 regardless.

Sure. He certainly wouldn't make my ten. But he was one of the first "obscure" fighters I ever found out about, and seeing him get a mention is always going to make me smile.

By obscure, I mean obscure for a guy who thought that Tyson and Bruno were top ten pound for pound all time material.

Selected rounds of Ebihara Kingpetch rematch are up now.Excellent fighters.

Ebihara is one of the most underrated fighters of his generation.
