I am just begining to delve into the flyweights and was hoping some lighterweight experts could give me some assistance. Outside of perhaps Midget Wolgast (Yeah, I know I am redundant!), I have a cursory knowledge at best of divisions below bantam..... So my questions are where would you begin researching this division???? What/which era(s) were the deepest in level of quality opposition? I know the bigger names of some of the ATG ranked Fly's but nothing or very little about their opposition...Which contenders should I research/watch? Who are the: Most asthetically pleasing to watch? Most powerful? Most skilled? Also who are some forgotten pre-video footage flys to study?
1 - That might be controversial, but I would say the 60s. 2- Walter McGowan, Betulio Gonzalez, Guty Espadas, DAve McAuley..... 3- Most pleasing to watch imo is the guy in my avatar, Yuri Arbachakov...Most powerful is probably Jimmy Wilde, but I would say Arbachakov was impressively powerful too...most skilled is hard to say, Arbachakov is up there with anyone , Masao Ohba is great too, Midget Wolgast as well, watch his fight with Juan Zurita, is on YT. Pre-video footage I think would be awesome to know more on Wilde´s opponents....
I think the 20s were tops. Jimmy Wilde Fidel LaBarba Midget Wolgast Franke Genaro Pancho Villa Panama Al Brown Wee Willie Davies Spider Pladner Newsboy Brown Corporal Izzy Schwartz Black Bill
60s for me; Harada Ebihara Chionoi Accavallo Burruni Kingpetch McGowan Salavarria Tanabe Torres In no order.
As we discussed very recently I agree this era is right up there. Lack of footage of the best is heartbreaking.
