SRL's diversity and ability to adjust was his greatest strength...
That was definitely proven versus Senior's style after the first couple rounds...
Senior would clam up and SRL would just tear into him... and he was rarely in position to get countered by the straight right, instead of squaring up in front, he'd slide to the right and flank Senior as he hides behind the shoulder. The counter right wholly negated...

Mayweather Sr did give Leonard some trouble in spots, but he also got beaten around the ring like a punchbag at other points, and eventually got stopped. I agree that Jr is a far greater fighter than Sr, but it still wouldn't be enough to beat Leonard. I do think their match would be competitive, and Leonard would definitely have problems getting through Jr's defence. In the early rounds Leonard would probably miss quite a bit trying to land shots to the head, and he'd eat some counters too.

The problem for Mayweather is that Leonard's offensive tools are very dangerous, and he also has the head movement to evade pot shots on the way in. Once Leonard gets frustrated trying to land, he'll become more aggressive, and Mayweather will have to start using a lot of lateral movement. He can't stand his ground on the ropes or in the pocket and just try to roll shots, because Leonard's combinations, handspeed, power and punch placement (notice in the Sr fight how he takes his time, varying between body and head, landing powerful shots around the guard instead of just flailing like many of Mayweather's opponents) would be a real problem, and Mayweather could get caught in an exchange and get hurt. If Mayweather chooses to move and pot shot, Leonard will stalk him around the ring, and he's fast enough (in terms of both feet and hands) to catch up to Mayweather and still land shots. Mayweather doesn't have much chance of hurting and stopping Leonard, but Leonard can hurt him. Leonard will probably have the most success with jabs and sweeping rights.

Mayweather will have to go for a points win, and he'll have his moments, but he won't be able to get by on his usual low workate due to Leonard's combinations. (Even if Leonard misses a fair amount, he can steal rounds on workrate alone.) Mayweather will have to step up his punch output and throw more combinations himself (as he did against Cotto recently) and when he does that, he leaves himself more open than usual, and Leonard would take advantage of this to land his own shots. Leonard, unlike some of Mayweather's opponents, also has the stamina to throw at a high rate for the entire fight. He's not going to fade down the stretch and let Mayweather take over.

I think Leonard wins a competitive fight on points. If he manages to hurt Mayweather then he might knock him down along the way, but Mayweather's superb defence will probably get him to the bell unless he gets hit with a really big punch. (Leonard is a good finisher.)

 

Because whilst SRL is an ATG, and would definitely beat Mayweather, SRL also ducked fights and 'cherry picked'.

i.e. He went into retirement, waited out Hagler... Hagler got old and lost a step... SRL stepped out of retirement and said: Let's fight!

He's admitted as much too.

On a separate note, quite similar to Floyd Mayweather!!!

I don't like matching him up with any of the great welter's of recent history because those guys were MUCH bigger men than FLoyd and the peak of Floyd's powers were in the lower weight classes.

It makes most sense to match him up in his prime with guys that were actually around his size- Arguello, JCC, Pernell, Pryor, Casamayor, Duran, etc.

But if the a fight were to happen hypothetically between FMJ and SRL at 147, I'd favor Leonard probably 70-30. It wouldn't be as one sided as some make it out to be, FLoyd's not the easiest guy in the world to land clean shots against. BUt I'd go SD for Leonard, maybe UD.

Floyd would get countered himself by a fighter much stronger than him. Floyd would barely stun SRL at best. SRL would look for a weakness in Floyd and hurt him bad then break him down. No way Floyd would avoid a SRL combo SRL would make Floyd open up and crack open that defense with body shots or right hands.

 

So what it was Sr's 17th pro fight and he didnt nearly have the amateur or olympic pedigree of SRL. Also SRL was Highly ranked by the WBA at the time, Top 5 i believe.

Bernardo Prada, Dick Eklund, Rafael Rodriguez & Adolfo Viruet went a full 10 rounds with Leonard....But he will Brutalize Floyd Jr?

Yes but Floyd made it to 147, and at one point in his career Leonard was a standard sized 147 (we're not talking about a margarito/ortiz style rehydrate here

comparing the two at 147 would probably be more a factor of age than anything else

It's just as embarrassing to make the "SRL destroys Floyd" posts as it is to say any other possible outcome. When the **** has Floyd ever been "destroyed" by anyone? I have no issue with the opinion Ray wins, I would lean toward Ray winning but there's nothing in the archives to suggest Floyd gets destroyed.
