I missed the ending but Dirrell does seem to have improved quite a bit(offensively anyway) he used to look very very poor imo. However I still can't see him making it anywhere near the top or ever winning a World title. His defense is awful and against a guy that could actually jab, he may have some serious problems. I think he'll have to get used to living in his brother's shadow and unless he's fighting on his brother's undercard he'll be staying on ESPN for the foreseeable future(not that there's any shame in that). He'll be okay at domestic level.
You obviously didn't see the last two Irish Senior finals, where I came across the two best amateur fights I've seen. Darren Sutherland v Darren O'Neill in 2008 Carl Frampton(now a pro) v David Oliver Joyce in 2009 absolute wars, with no little skill.
TBH I only watch the ABAs and the Olympics, the Olympics in particular just arn't as exciting as they used to be.
Ya I know what you mean I wouldn't expect anyone to watch the national championships of any country but their own. The Olympics certainly aren't what they used to be, it's more human fencing now. I tend to watch the Irish Championships, World's, Olympics, Commonwealth's and occasionally the ABA's. Seems like quite a bit but in truth it's not that much. The European's really should get more coverage than they do, you'd expect at least a highlights package on some channel for them.
Yep, "fencing" sums it up well unfortuneatly. I do watch the Commonweaths (they slipped my mind) but the Worlds and Euros are quite hard to catch on TV. I wasn't having a pop at all amatuer boxing but to see those Olympic clips of Tate vs O'Sullivan and Tillman vs DeWitt brought back some great memories from those Games.
