The guy who dosnt fight an elliminator. When there is nothing between two guys they draw. Harris or Pastrano might just have easily drew with Folley or machen too. Four guys were the same level in 1957-58 and they all lost to Europeans.
perhaps not overall but think back to 1957. 1957-1958 machen, Folley, pastrano and Harris were youngsters with simular level of experience. Yes perhaps Folley and Machen developed further later on but at that time there wasnt really much between them. Losing to the Euros compounds this. Harris and Folley both lost to Cooper and Liston. Machen drew with and lost to Folley. Same same.
Machen and Folley were already further developed Which is why there were 1 and 2 in 1957 and Harris was not
Nothing between Folley and Harris. Folley was not beating anyone in 1957of any note and only got a split decision over the best fringe guy he got of that year. Harris was with the coast guard for a few months so perhaps he got bumped?
Harris did get dropped down in the ratings because of his military service. That is undeniable. It was discussed in those magazines. Hindsight is a lovely thing but it counts for nothing in an a discussion like this. You have to take these events as they unfolded on the ground, not as you reinterpret them 50 years later.
He may have only drawn and lost vs Folley, but I think Machen was better. His effort vs Liston impresses me. Imagine if Eddie had two good hands and maybe a bit more size....he already had the ***** and the attitude. His taunting of Liston and tactics...occasionally roughing up Sonny and stepping on his feet were outrageous for an opponent of '58-'63 Liston.
