I was just thinking the same thing. Way back in 2004(crazy that 2004 was 15 years ago) he lost a close fight with Andre Ward in the Olympics at LHW(81kg.)

Vykhryst is completely dominating young Croatian now, hurt him badly in the first round, referee counted a standing knockdown and another one in the second round.

Vykhryst won by TKO in round 3. Vykhryst hurt Mulin badly in the third round with a big right hand and referee stopped the fight.

GB's Benjamin Whittaker looked really impressive in his semi-final win. Sublime display of British Slickness there

Viktor Vykhryst vs Mourad Aliev set for the final at 91+. Vykhryst seems to be in excellent form, expect him to defend his title. Aliev seemingly came out of nowhere, beating Nistor and the guy who upset Clarke in his semifinal, definitely not writing him off entirely.

Big win for Vykhryst. I guess Mullin wasn’t ready. Did not see the match yet.

Milun looked totally overmatched, punches coming in way too wide with no distance control. Vykhryst hurt with a right hand in the first, didn’t miss with it after and just kept slamming it home until The ref stepped in. Given he’s only been boxing for two years getting to to the semis is a fine achievement in its own right and this’ll be a great experience for him. Vykhryst has looked great so far.

Russo was still green and didn’t have anywhere near the number of fights Ward had and STILL almost beat him. Lol Another example of how good Russo is.

I never said he wasn't or didn't. Ive never been a particular fan of his style but he certainly was blessed with excellent speed, explosiveness, and strength. Whether someone is a fan of his or not, I think he has more than proven how great an amateur boxer he was/is, and he has done it over an extremely long period of time and racked up the accolades both domestically and internationally to prove it. And he has always had a granite chin to boot.

On a side note, with Russo's physical and athletic gifts, if he had turned pro and hooked up with the right trainer he really could have been a ferocious banger I think. If he sat down on his punches more and refined his punching technique he more than had the requisite speed, explosiveness, and strength to have been a murderous puncher. I think that would have been the case had he turned pro after the 2004 Olympics, but as time went on it would have gotten tougher and tougher for him to have done so, as his style was based on success in the amateur scoring system and it becomes much harder to change things like that up the longer you employ them and the older you get.

He was 2 years older than Ward. Ward had zero international experience at the time.

The final score was 17-9. Wasn't all that close.

It looks like Ukraine and GB are getting the best of it. What’s happening with Kaz and IRL?
