Roy Jones is the daddy of footwork; forget Hopkins and Mayweather Jr.

How many babies (boxers) have been made from Roy....

Holyfield, Ezzard Charles, Willie Pep, Joe Louis as mentioned, Tony Canzoneri for footwork(don't copy his fighting style he was very reflexive but look at his feet), Gene Tunney, and Jose Napoles

the third one against the ropes show just how fast (physically and mentally) Floyd is he made Ortiz hit nothing but air and made him pay. Good example, the Marquez vs Pacquiao Fights and Mayweather Hatton are also good examples

    :good thanks
:yep not all of them are that difficult. The one where he side steps Ortiz along the ropes is something I wouldn't ever attempt in a fight unless I had months or years of practice
thanks pimpin and I agree too. I boxed my little cousin over the weekend at my grandma's house and I was making him look silly with that move :D

    thanks dog
yeah I wonder how many times they drilled that move while training

I just watched Hagler vs Briscoe. Thought Hagler did a great job of moving around and using Briscoe's limited mobility against him (I am by no means an expert on Briscoe and I'm merely assuming that Briscoe's mobility was limited based on this fight. If I am wrong by all means correct me).

I think some posters and fans confuse quick feet with good footwork. Great footwork helps control distance, creates angles and allows a fighter to strike often while his opponent is in a compromising position. Bhop, Toney, and PBF and the best in the game since Pernell (Tyson was also great). Unfortunately, great footwork is starting to fade away with most of the old school trainers. I hope the fighters mentioned above would become trainers and teach the next generation this dyeing art form ( i was hoping that Bhop was gonna take Pavlik under his wing when he schooled him because of the good things he said about him).

Never, liked RJJ . . . he had some of the quickest feet in the business but I would not say he has great footwork rather great athletic ability. I am a fan of Pacs (I have to go back and watch the Cotto fight) but I think pacs footwork as one of his biggest setbacks. I think the slight bounce he has would be and has been easily timed by great boxers like JMM. Also while he is great at angles he often find himself off balance.

Great gifs from BBall earlier :good

Mayweather is one of the few active fighters that uses pivot movements effectively, RJJ was prob the best at this kind of movement in his prime.
Both are superhuman with speed and reflexes though so I wouldn't try to emulate their particular styles too closely.

Both Carlos Monzon and Roberto Duran had an amazing knack of manoeuvering their opponent into the exact position they wanted them, with a combination of footwork and blind intimidation. They both broke their opponents down systematically and brutally. Would be well worth your time watching some old fights imo.

Holyfield had underrated foot-work but my choice for this thread is Miguel Canto vs Avelar

    An absolute masterclass
