For those curious here's footages of Ismael Laguna against Raul Soriano and Nicolino Locche. In the first fight in the video against Soriano you'll see Laguna brutally stopping him, but then showing some classless behavior by pushing the referee and trying his best to continue pounding Soriano. Surprised that Laguna wasn't disqualified for that type of behavior. Reminded me of Wilfredo Gomez. The second fight you see at the 2:20 mark is against Locche. From the footage that I'm seeing it seems like Laguna is doing more work by throwing more punches (albeit missing punches but still outworking him). I would think that the "draw" was more of a disputed hometown decision in favor of Locche. This content is protected
Great find man. I've noticed that in a few 'slick' Panamanian boxers. They can get really hot headed. Tbh these clips don't really show a fight I'd want to see, only have for historical reasons.
"Lightweight champion Ismael Laguna of Panama pounded Mexican lightweight champ Raul Soriano unmercifully Saturday night to score an easy 8th round TKO in their non-title bout at Olympic Stadium. Laguna, 136, started slowly and didn't show much of his vaunted speed in the early rounds. But at the start of the 5th round he began hitting Soriano almost at will with a series of quick left-right combinations. Soriano, 136 3/4, continued to absorb punches through the 6th and 7th rounds and in the 8th the Panamanian succeeded in getting Soriano pinned against the ropes." -United Press International The Panamanian Boxing Commission fined Laguna $200.00 (which was raised to $250.00 when Laguna protested their decision) for inappropriate behavior and "aggressive action" during the bout. With Soriano helpless on the ropes in the 8th round, while the referee was trying to stop the fight, Laguna twice pushed the referee out of the way to get in more punches. The Mexican Boxing Commisssion announced no Panamanian boxers would be permitted to box on Mexican soil and no Mexican boxers would be allowed to box in Panama until Laguna apologised for his "disgracefully unsportsmanlike conduct".
I had read about this but never thought I would see it. Great find here. Here is the boxrec writeup on this. Seems to be a paltry fine considering. Bump. Laguna doesn't get enough love but he really was an impressive fighter with a nice resume. That was a vicious assault that he put on Soriano, although showing despicable behavior at the end. I'm curious to know what made him act up like that. Had the Saldivar and Locche fight go into his favor with the judges his resume will look even better.
And the first Buchanan fight. I'll watch the rest of the vid later, but I was pretty appalled by the behaviour vs Soriano. Obviously there was some needle there. Laguna is one of those fighters who's a darkhorse across plenty of weights. He's a threat to almost anyone from Bantam to Lightweight.
Bump. Here’s the first part of the video that shows Laguna’s fights with Pedro Miranda and Carlos Ortiz. Laguna at his best was a very fast fighter with fine skills and a beautiful boxing style. This content is protected
