What happened to him, did he fall out of love with the game? Was touted as a top notch middleweight prospect but always seemed to be doing just enough to win in his pro' bouts.

He had some sinus problem that wasn't allowing him to breathe properly and was out a while to have it fixed, had a couple fights then was out again for about 9 months all of 2012 with visa issues. He just had his first fight back a week or two ago against Milton Nunez. Don't think there is any footage but all 3 judges scored it 8-0 and the accounts iv read all described him as looking impressive and dominating. Top Rank and his manager Dunkin sound like he's ready to make a run for a title now in his next couple fights. He's 18-0 i hope he does step up so we see what he can do.

Let's hope, if he gets a solid contender under his belt it'd be great to see him in the mix with Pirog and Golovkin at 160/168.

ye i couldn't find him either:think but i know him personally and im sure i've been told he won it in 1987&88, he's spoken to me briefly about what training was like in the soviet team as well. in fact he worked with the russian team when they were over here last year, they asked him to come help out and he went and trained with them when they were doing some work with an english/british team if i remember correctly

Yes, that's why I was asking about him. Me dad said he was a real good fighter. He was 19 when he fought him in the 61 Europeans, he said Stolnikov was like a seasoned pro.
I remember asking me dad when I was a kid(long time ago) how come that nearly all the top fighters were black Americans. He said wait and see what happens if the Eastern block fighters ever get the chance to turn pro, he had a lot of respect for those fellas. I think we're seeing what happens now.
Anyway, don't want to hijack the thread, I'll post something about Ageev tomorrow. Do you know of any British fighters he fought by the way? I might be able to track someone down who boxed him.

I checked the European Championships none in 1965 but in 1967 he fought a Scottish fighter named Tom Imrie in the Quarter Finals. That's the only one from the UK.

Great footage by the way, couldn't understand it but looking at the European championship page i got the gist, I recognised Italy I think. Like you say, low guard and great reflexes along with a very busy style made him very formidable. Winning a European amateur title is no mean feat, it's proved harder for British fighters than winning the Olympics and he won it twice. Rybakov the lad with the moustache actually won 3 Europeans at bantam, feather and lightweight. Wonder how the boxing history books would of looked if these fellas had turned pro along with Lagutin and co.

Here's a clip of Tom Imrie by the way causing a big upset in the 1966 ABA finals against future British middleweight Champ (pro) Mark Rowe.

Lol Nope. Only thing about the video you commented on is Rybakov's sweet moustache :D but nothing about Ageev.

What exactly are you looking for, I watched it. I think if it was in English you might of got a bigger response. As for Ageev, I think he would of made a very good top quality pro.

Just your impression of him and his style in general, what you like and don't like, how you think he might have done as a pro in the 60's era with Pender, Tiger, Giardello, Benvenuti, Griffith, etc.

he looks very smooth and has good power from the footage

    being born in russia
i always found it interesting and odd
did boris laugtin have some connections that
always sent him to the olympics and ageev only got to go
    european championships

i mean they are 2-2 and most older russians
seem to like ageev better as a boxer
