It's like we got the general forum back for all those invasions that were going on in the classic

 Seriously, you know me, I'm a big advocate of the older fighters, not that there aren't good fighters about now. But I think some people don't know what there looking at when there watching boxing but some of the lads on this thread obviously do.

I hate the argument that training techniques today are so much more advanced that old school fighters couldnt hang.

How do boxers train today? They run, sprint, heavy bag, speed bag, uppercut bag, spar, calisthetics, medicine ball, swim, rowing machines. You think guys werent training like that 50 years ago? Or even 100 years ago?

No one could convince me that SRR, Ike Williams, Lew Tendler, Ezzard Charles, Carlos Ortiz, Willie Pep wouldnt be champions today.

Moorer, Monzon and Spinks are old timers to you? lol... There is a ****LOAD of video on guys from that era. It's not hard to find.

'old timers' are Harry Greb, 'nonpariel' Jack Dempsey etc and good luck finding any footage of them looking anywhere near as technically proficient as modern fighters. There isn't any.

fighters from the late 30's to mid 70s were better. Just as technically sound, and generally tougher and also better conditioned. However guys from the real early days would get the **** kicked of them though.

Humans are taller and bigger now adays, but 140lbs is still 140lbs no matter if it 1920 or 2020. Its not like football or basketball, weight classes limit how big u can get.

Wow your not a hater .The Ped 's he took were over the counter suppliments..Ripped fuel is hardly a performance enhancer but if u can support the arguement that such a drug can give you cat like reflexes im all ears !

And your going to knock Jones for his division really was the middle weight divsion that steller when Hopkins reigned ??Chinny ordinary fighter ?Are you summing up Jones based on his 3 Ko losses or the rest of his 50 fights ??If your going to scrutinize Jones than tell me who else doesn't thrive in this enviroment !!

I'd say those were pretty much the glory days as far as the evolution and overall peak of the sport's technical side (more from about the early 30's to the mid 80's, though), with a good many pioneers leading up to the period and a select few carrying on the tradition afterwards. Unfortunately the further down the line the sport has come the fewer and further between those fighters seem to be.

Pre-Walker Law (which came into effect in 1920) the sport was quite different in the way it was set up, and therefore it's pretty useless to compare fighters from these different eras to one another under modern rules/regulations, just as much as it would be to place modern era fighters into bare-knuckle settings where the tactics employed differed so greatly.

    To the original poster:

This video is not a real time fight. It's a slow motion highlight of Joe Louis. I'm not sure if you only wanted to see full fights, but this highlight right here will put to rest any doubts about Joe Louis' abilities.

    Good post :good

As for the training of the old timers... My grandpa told me that when he was a kid (late 20s - early 30s) that there was a fighter who trained in their neighborhood. All the kids would go watch him work out, and to strengthen his abs, guess what he used?

An ab lounger? NOPE... A metal pipe banged across his gut while doing sit ups!

    THAT is dedication!

As far as head to head goes, if this is the question. I realy don't thik it matters when a boxer is from. I think the better boxer is going to win regaurdless of his eara. The only real advantage that curent boxers have is in the heavyweight divson where they are bigger stronger and faster.
