    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any good drills for improving footwork?

Any specific thing about footwork you want to improve, or just general?

Here's some ones I've been doing. Haven't been doing it long enough to see any significant improvements yet but they seem good.

Shadowbox but focus on footwork. Pay attention to the distance you move during combos (eg jab head-straight body) is it enough or too much, your balance at every point whether your punching or not, work on 1-2's forward-backwards-left-right-clockwise-counter clockwise-pivoting either way and pay attention to once again (balance, not crossing your legs, how well grounded you are, how fast you can change direction and how you do it). Just dont forget about your guard. If you really want a drill just take 1 thing I mentioned and do that 100+ times paying attention to what I said...BAM! Youve got a drill.

I guess this is kind of a drill, I use a really light bag (50lbs) on a long chain and get it swinging. I'll follow it forward or back or around in circles, side step it, etc for about 3-5 rounds.

Can people share what drills their coach made them do when they first started out?

Those drills seem pretty good right hooker...the last 3, I cant watch the 1st two. Some of them I do with the jump rope too but never considered it a drill, just a new pattern to mix it up.

You could start out doing a step, pivot and slide during shadow boxing and throw different punches while doing them. for example you could throw a double jab and STEP forward, a left hook while you PIVOT on your left foot starting out with quarter turns to your right (assuming you are orthodox) or you could throw a right cross instead and PIVOT to your left by bringing your right foot over and PIVOTING on your left and then jab out while you SLIDE back. this is a good one for starters then once you get more comfortable you would change up the order of your steps and different punches and incorporate combos. Do this instead of just standing in the same spot while shadow boxing and dont forget head movement. Hope this made sense, I kinda typed it out in haste.
