For all those who say Calzaghe would beat Hopkins no matter when they fought...

Peak Calzaghe (Lacy fight) would be competitive against peak Hopkins (Trinidad fight), but would lose a UD. There is no doubt in my mind.

You haven't understood the point pacfan.
I agree that Hopkins doesn't have the same workratio he did.

This is what made him hold and spoil all nioght in an attempt to just make it to the end. That the fight was in the US and that his spoiling made the fight messy is another thing.

What would have happened if he had better stamina is that hopefully he would have opened up more in which case he would have lost even cleaerer.

you see? Noone is disputing that his stamina isn't what it was.

Did you watch the Hopkins-Calzaghe fight? Every time Hopkins did "open up" he was by far the more incisive and effective fighter.

And "open up" is a misleading phrase to use regarding B-Hop anyway. He didn't "open up" as such, and he wouldn't v Calzaghe, he would fight the same fight, nullifying attacks and scoring with counters and inside shots, but he would be faster and be much more active. I cannot see how Calzaghe could win that one at all. He couldn't land a single blow flush on Hopkins in 12 rounds when Hopkins was there to be hit, he certainly wouldn't when Hopkins was at his physical peak.

    Diesagree.

If prime Hopkins fought a Calzaghe at Joe's physical prime (which may be around 29 or so) then my money would be on Hopkins. The Calzaghe that could hardly beat Redi would have lost to Hopkins - I have no doubt in my mind he would. Only in the last couple of years has Jo shown a strenght that could make me think Joe may have won prime vs prime - given that we are talking overall prime for Joe (in other words now!). Now he is fighting smart whereas he used to fight rather dumb and mostly with his heart.

Current Joe (prime) would probably have beaten prime Hopkins and the more Hopkins had tried to join the fight the clearer Joe would have won. Joe is always better when the opponent makes the fight.

PacFan. By Calzaghe's peak I was mainly talking PHYSICAL attributes. No doubt his best performance of his career is the Lacy fight I agree but a younger Calzaghe around '03 would have stopped Lacy no doubt. Nobody could have took that level of punishment for 12 rounds with punches that actually have some power behind them. After then that his when his hands started to affect him even more and in turn affecting his ability to punch with conviction. Maybe the '06 to present version of Calzaghe is a more rounded fighter who knows but there's no doubt that his power is nowhere near what it was (even though he was never a KO artist his power was very good at one point) and would have gotten Hopkins respect that's for sure.

The trouble with Cazlaghe is that he has always had the tendency to fight to the level of his opponents so can look nowhere near his best against the likes of Salem etc. and then look totally different against the top dogs. It's as if he needs the fear factor to kick in to perform to the best of his abilities.

Such a shame the first Hopkins didn't come off.
