For how long do you consider Wlad to have been the true HW champ?

I think either the Chagave or Povetkin are fine.

    I count from Povetkin.

I personally think from the Chagaev fight he was the clear champion and from the Byrd fight he was the arguable number 1 but it was still debatable. After spanking Chagaev it wasn't really debatable.

The only asterisk for me is Vitali and you could argue that from the moment Vitali beat Sanders he was the best HW in the world and given his temporary retirement any other man was merely an interim champ.

Johnson, Frazier and Charles were able to claim a vacant belt in the absence of the retiring champ but all 3 also beat that retired champ. All 3 were also considered the defending champ during the respective fights so there is historical precedence here. An announced retirement should end a title claim, in fact it has to end one.

The only real question is at one point did Wlad beat a man worthy of a vacant title claim. I would day given Vitali being his brother that was Chagaev but I get those who refuse it until Povetkin, although Holmes never faced his next best challenger

You bring up some good points and having thought about it I'm changing my decision and agreeing with you that it's more than reasonable to consider Wlad the true heavyweight champion after beating Chagaev.

He clearly became the man in my eyes after beating Byrd in the 2006 rematch.

Definitely not an easy thing to pinpoint, with big brother Vitali around it was almost like they were both ruling the division during that time. I don't think we'll ever truly know who was the man due to their refusal to fight one another(understandable) very unique set of circumstances and as a result we'll never truly know. I have to go with Wlad because of his superior resume though.

I've toyed with that idea too - but this has to be predicated on Chagaev being considered a legitimate challenger for the 'Vacant Lineal Title'. Given Chagaev was a champ in recess, due to injury and inactivity over a couple of years, I find it difficult to give him this level of credibility.

The other commonly recognised fly in the ointment, is Vitali's return; him winning the WBC strap and being installed as the generally recognised number 2 in the division. He had been the recognised 'Champ' before his first retirement and was never defeated upon his return. Moreover, I think I would be correct in saying that, during Vitali's second run, his and Wladimir's only common opponent was Sam Peter. If this is the case then it adds weight to there being a distinctly separate line of the Championship being run via Vitali and the WBC.

Both factors confuse the issue but, with the above in mind, I think a good case could be made for the Povetkin 'W' being the point from which Wlad can be considered the True HW Champ.

Imo Wlad has been the champ since his brother Vitali retired.
When Vitali was active, he was the true champ in imo!

Vitali Klitchko is the best heavyweight of his era, no doubt!

From the byrd fight. He beat clearly the number one and became the number one. Then if you want his claim could Start when he beat ibrahimov who was number 2.
