Fair enough, but the last few, you'll notice, have question marks. I'd put them in the top 100, but not necessarily in the top 50.

Looking back on this list I would have to include Rickson Gracie, Fedor Emelianenko, Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre in with a list of FIGHTERS that includes Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey and Rocky Marciano.

Excellent list man, I love the respect you show to Roy Jones Jr, as not many do, and also Ted Kid Lewis who is my favorite British fighter of all time.

Edit: Wow, didn't realize how old this thread was!

Nonsense! I have to shake my head when people are too lazy to research a great fighter and then judge him unfairly due to their lack of discipline. Read the many round by round newspaper accounts of Greb's fights. Study his record and see for yourself just how many greats he beat and beat easily, in most cases. Watch the footage that exists of these fighters and remind yourself that Greb beat them easily. The man had the greatest resume of ANY fighter in the history of boxing. He went 45-0 in the year 1919 alone and fought the last five years of his career blind in one eye. He was the only man to defeat Gene Tunney and he beat him to a bloody pulp.
I guess your Greatest Fighters list should be titled "Greatest Pound For Pound Television Fighters of All Time". Any knowledgeable boxing fan or historian should have Harry Greb in the top ten. I have him at #2 ranked only behind Sugar Ray Robinson.

I couldn't agree more about the laziness issue!

I mean I suppose we are now expected to watch complete career sets before ranking an opponent right? Why stop at just "watching them fight"?

Is this man expecting us to believe he has watched every minute of every fighter he ranks?

Round by round reports and fight reports are equally as valid as watching a fight imo.

Even today two people can watch a fight and disagree or you can read a report and think "i never noticed that"

D, congrat's on your 5000th post. But to deny
boxing history and to not even put Jack Dempsey in your top FIFTY at all is a travesty to all who voted him the top heavyweight in prior polls. SILLY. And to put Joe Louis #18, behind an Ali or Ezzard Charles, both who a prime Louis would have licked is ludicrous. And to put Barbados Joe Walcott at #30, behind a Ross or Ray Leonard is an injustice to the great
Walcott...But congrats for your effort, and uno 5000. Cheers...

btw, the double dot (..) means i've ranked them the greatest in a particular division (i put morales at sbw but my knowledge of that division is weak so i'm not sure if that sounds stupid or not :nut)

Burt, not everyone does a list based on H2H. So Dempsey might p4p beat a lot of people but that isn't necessarily the criteria that was used.

luf,in all sincerity, how on earth could you omit a Jack Dempsey in your list of the top 50 fighters ? I propose therefore Dempsey's name should be persona non grata on ESB. For all intents and purposes it is ! For anyone
to deny the vast majority of boxing experts who saw him ringside at his
best, and voted him the best fighter in polls years ago,and ascertain that
these posters, know more eighty years later, borders on revisionism,in my opinion.. You say this thread is not H2H....Ok, than Dempsey at 180-87
flattened 215-260 pound heavyweights at his best. He was the FIRST that floored the giant Jess Willard with one left-hook ,whilst weighing70 pounds less. He was the first to stop Battling Levinsky in over 200 bouts.
Dempsey after a two year layoff, outboxed a defensive master Tommy Gibbons in 15 rounds. He flattened the crude but powerful Firpo in the second round with two short blurring punches so fast the camera can barely detect the punches.! Afyer a 3 year layoff he dropped Gene Tunney with a 7 punch combo in 1927. He persevered and WORE down a
PRIME 25 year old Jack Sharkey, koing Sharkey in 1927,whioe at 32 ,Dempsey was a shell of himself . Yes ,he didn't fight as often as we would have liked today. But after a young life of poverty, when he became champion,he decided to go Hollywood, and train with Hollywood starlets,
rather than sparring partners. Who can blame him.?..But when he was at his BEST, he combined the speed of a middleweight, and the punching power, second to none...In short, a tough hombre, certainly deserving
a place in the top 5-10 greatest fighters of all-time, in the opinion of those who SAW him ringside, and I concur...Cheers L...

The category is about fighters not just boxers.....thats why I added Fedor, Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre and Rickson Gracie....I am sure that there are more such as Chuck Norris, Liu Hailong who would crush many on the top list....Rocky Marciano, Jack Dempsey, Roberto Duran, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Hary Greb certainly desreve to be near the top of the list.
