But we do know the background of Louis v Marciano, so we can assess it?

You've made your point, fair enough, but as I said, I am in the school of thought which believes boxing fans can and should rank the greatest exponents of their art.

I always think of it as how good the guy is at his own weight.

For me, Ricardo Lopez was better and achieved more at his weights than say, Riddick Bowe at heavyweight, thus Lopez is a greater fighter pound-for-pound. Simple. Completely subjective of course, but still a simple enough method of conceiving ratings for it to be worthwhile IMO.

Hey Pacfan great post as always. Gotta ask where do you rate my guy?

I had to have Monzon in there, he is the greatest middleweight in history h2h IMO, and an 81-fight unbeaten streak. A modern God! I had to really hold myself back from putting Sugar Ray Leonard and Pernell Whitaker much closer to the top 10 as I genuinely feel their skills deserved it, but when you consider their relatively short tenure at the top, it can't really be justified sadly.

I haven't written a top 100 mate, so I genuinely don't know, but he would definitely be in there somewhere, Tito was a truly great welterweight. I rate Trinidad from his own era in a little group or tier of fighters of roughly similar greatness: Trinidad, Calzaghe, Mosley, Winky, JM Marquez, Tszyu. But I rank Tito at the very top of that tier, he is better p4p than all of those guys IMO. Calzaghe 2nd.

I tend to go alittle bit more off skills ,, but its not really fair I guess.. with different era's comes new techniques, training , technologies and more... Cause I don't see a fighter like Fitzsimmons ever hanging with Glen Johnson , little lone RJJ at 175... but, different eras

I understand what you mean. Roy Jones Jr's speed and power would dazzle Ezzard Charles IMO, so there is the temptation to put our modern fighters higher, but for me resume and accomplishment are too important. We must respect guys that fought every couple of months for well over a decade.

it is subjective which is why they are individualistic.

for example i like khasoi galaxy

always fought on his hometurf but his fights were televised on dickie davis world of sport , so i got to see him fight many times.

huge man for his weight , looked 2 division above all his opponents and punched holes through walls with his power.

won about 20 world title fights and fought about 50 times only losing in a nothing early fight.

but fought in a division i dont beleive in and i would rank him h2h with flyweights and bantamweights.

but at his weightclass he is the ATG.

These are fair points, and can be an issue when ranking fighters without footage if most of the criteria is based simply on reports of their skills and style. But if a fighter has the record and names on his resume to prove without a shadow of a doubt that he indeed was that good, I don't see the controversy. Greb's resume is among the top 2 of all time along with Langford's. It is astonishing the number of quality guys and great fighters he beat, how often he beat them, and how dominant he is said to have been, many fighters whom we actually do have footage of, ranging from MW to HW. I don't think it can truly be argued that he wasn't as good as advertised, unless you're of the mindset not to include fighters of past eras due to stylistic differences, rule changes, regulations, etc. etc.

Khaosai would probably rank about 5th at Super Flyweight. He's still very overrated, though I'm not saying he was a stiff or anything.

Whitaker can certainly be justified above Monzon, and should as I see it.
