I've done some numbercrunching from boxrec, and come up with the following:

Taking the top 20 in each of the divisions below, the average heights are:

    HW - 6'3 (75.10)
    CW - 6'1 (73.11)
    LHW - 5'11.5 (71.55)
    SMW - 5'11.5 (71.58 )
    MW - 5'11.5 (71.50)
    LMW - 5'10 (69.78 )
    WW - 5'8.5 (68.47)

The numbers in brackets are the average in inches.

I know some of the heights on boxrec can look a bit dodgy, but it gives a good indication.

    Depends on your build, really

Well that really narrows it down!

I'd say most likely feather (126) up to welter (147), but it could be much more. If you're lanky, you want height and reach to be your advantage with smaller guys. If you're chunky, then it might be your disadvantage with bigger guys at 154-168...

I'm only 5'6, and a built 160 (6% body fat). I've trained for quite a few years, never have fought amatuers, but spar all the time. I box, run, marital arts, swim, and lift 6 times a week about 3 hours a day (stretch at least twice a day as well). Even at my size my hand speed is faster than most anybodies I spar with...Even the guys that have been doing martial arts for years, and practice being fluid/ relaxed/ quick.
If you train properly: stretch, do cardio, box a little each day (tecnique mostly), and lift the correct way it doesn't matter what size you are really. You will have ***FUNCTIONABLE*** muscle that will help you. It's also about picking a style. You have to choose do you want to focus more on offense, or defense. You really can't do both...and if your shorter you damn sure better be the aggressor most of the time. I box somebody much taller, and I fight like Tyson (bob and weave, duck down a little bit, work my way in/ power my way in if I must, and then rip there body apart). I honestly prefer to be short when it comes to boxing because I love being aggressive.

Oh, forgot to mention. Work your neck/ traps DAILY. Whenever I was around 140 i'd box, and was pretty good. My neck would constantly be sore since I wasn't use to sparring. Quit sparring for a while, worked my neck everyday (neck exercises, or lifting), got my neck quite massive. Whenever somebody hits me now it never hurts, and I can take a hell of a lot better punch. Makes a huge difference IMO

Anywhere from about 154 down.... depending on your style and what your strengths are... How much power you have could be a determining factor... if you're a stocky 5'9 like Kelvin Davis you could probably go a little higher... But in my opinion, if you're 5'9 you should be no higher than154.. and that's pushin it..

Benn was 5"9... 5"9 is quite good for a middleweight can get nice leverage and give lanky blokes fits.

    i'm 5 10 168.. about 160 when trim

Standard build means you'd be tight at 140, but that's where you'd look to kick off, with your best work coming at 147, and your old work coming at 154, probably. But i'm just making this **** up.

Okay, perhaps we should ask for ideal proportions then. At my leanest, my waist is 29 inches and my chest is 42. My pants are 32 in length. My neck is 17 inches. But like I said, I can't get below 158 anymore. It's impossible for me unless I starve and lose muscle mass.
