Calzaghe is a great fighter who will go down as the best super middleweight of all time but if you ask me you cant put him with the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, Duran, Chavez, Pacquiao, or Hopkins. His resume is just too weak.

If Calzaghe fans were honest, they would have to admit the fact that Calzaghe never faced a tough fighter until Hopkins and Jones.

And, both Hopkins and Jones were on the downside of their careers.

If Calzaghe wants to be remembered as great, he needs to fight a few fighters that are at the top and in their prime.

That is just the truth...not hate

Very true. He didn't have a moment in his career like Pac just had - a great win being the underdog. That's how greatness is forged. The closest thing to such a history making fight would be what, Lacy? That just doesn't cut it.

ur definately american. the toughest fighter he fought was kessler. hopkins was and jones were pretty easy. The only thing that kept hopkins in it was hes 'survival tactics' and cheating.

I agree he resume is not as strong as say pacman...but the fact remains 46-0- he beat everyone he had too-theres knowone that he had to fight he didnt. yes i would have loved to have seen jones jr fight earlier but jones reached the pinnacle before calzaghe...i bet 98 percent americans didnt kno who calzaghe was before lacy fight which was only like 4 years ago. Finally calzaghe also has ' hidden' wins like vs a tough bika with broken hand! midway through..........enjoy http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=38qJwZi_ngw

who do you suggest he fights though? if he fought and beat Dawson it would be exactly the same as when he beat Lacy. people would say Dawson was a hype job and you could see that in his fight with Johnson!

When he beat Hopkins it was because Hopkins was old yet when hopkins beat pavlik, Hopkins fought a better fight and if he fought like that against Joe he would of won.

Tell me who can he beat that will make people rate him higher? (no saying he should of fought Jones jr 10 years ago because he can't and Jones didn't want him then because Joe had no name so there was no gain).

He cant fight anyone to be honest with you that will put him up there with the all time greats. Like you said if he faces Dawson and beats him people say he was a unproven champion. If he faces Hopkins again beats him people will say he has Hopkins number(stupid excuse I know but they use it). If he beats Pavlik above 160 which will have to happen if the fight was gonna get made people will say he beat a one trick pony out of his weight class. If you ask me Joe came over to the states at a very bad time. The best fighters in the division are either too old or untested champions. Joe should just retire although I wont mind seeing the Dawson fight myself.

I would love to see the Dawson fight at home in cardiff, one for the fans, if they promote it well they may fill the stadium. As said though, won't do much for Joe's record unless Dawson goes on to do great things, same can be said about Kessler!

very good post. summed it up in a nut shell really. im a big calzaghe fighter but im under no illusion that he can be considored greater than any of the fighters that you mentioned earlyer in this thread.
i would like to see the dawson fight if only just to put an end to the calzaghe ducked dawson threads before they start. but your right it is to late now for calzaghe to cement his legacy up there with the all time greats. its a shame because he is still a bit of an unknown quantity. and we shall never know how far he could of gone. :good

Calzaghe will go down in history as one of the best ever.
