This is an interesting article I just glanced over from ESPN. Enjoy: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3458707
Nice article by espn.I see pancho's pic there. Pancho is our very first filipino champ, mind you he was never ko'ed in the ring, and i heard he was too kind and generous that he give away free tickets for his countrymen in the us to see him fight just like pac does now. Too bad he died of tooth decay at an early age of 24.
good read. thanks!!! today, suntukan means a street fight using bare hands. no rules of course. ive never though suntukan was a noble filipino martial art of centuries ago. got to check this out. also, i think middleweight ceferino garcia, the heaviest filipino who ever won a championship deserves a mention there. he invented the bolo punch after all.
He does deserve a mention. From what I understand from doing filipino martial arts several years back, these names are very interchangable-- and words that are used in the states like 'kali' are sometimes just catch-all words. Panantukman was our word for dirty boxing, pananjakman a word for dirty boxing with kicks, kali and escrima words for sticks and blades, and a whole slew of provincial names for different styles throughout the islands.
you pinoy? balot..! that kali. i saw some vid in youtube with some kali experts demostrating some kali drills. and wow... its very deadly.
