For the people insisting Rocky was "hard to hit" and had "underrated cleverness"

"Rocky Marciano was a crude, inexperienced fighter when I fought him in the Garden on october 26, 1951. He was easy to hit and he was awkward. He knocked me out because he could hit that night and I couldn't. I had nothing to hit him with. He was a vastly improved fighter the night he fought Walcott. He had learned to bob and weave with punches and he met the most important test of any fighter. He got hit, went down and came off the floor to win a fight. They used to say of Marciano that he was nothing but a rough puncher. I met a lot of nothings like Tony Galento, Buddy Baer, Tami Mauriello, and of course, Marciano. I was a lot luckier with the first three that I was able to get off the deck. When a guy can take a punch and hit like Marciano does that's more than plenty of nothing. He's a dangerous man in there every minute. You can't run and hide because the ring ropes stop you. You have to box him or fight him and take your chances. You can't make a mistake because he can end it with a punch"

    - Joe Louis

-Louis flat out said Rocky was easy to hit
-He said when he fought Rocky, he was crude and had to learn how to actually bob, weave, and punch with better accuracy.
-He also stated he was gunshy and had trouble letting his hands go (for all the people in denial).

Here's another refresher on how crude Rocky looked. This happened a lot in the fight and Louis made him look pretty bad despite being a gunshy old man.

Doesn't he outright state Rocky improved leading up to the Walcott fight?

What @Rollin said, and also…. You posted an 18 second edited clip of him missing a few punches against a top 3 ATG!

Im not even saying that you’re wrong, but you are not doing a good job of presenting your argument here..

Correct. Louis got beaten by a bum version of Marciano.

This highlight video begs to differ. He shows expert level defence & has his opponents missing most of their punches, rarely landing cleanly. Also, he made Louis miss a lot. He missed more than he landed. There are many examples of this in the video, with the best example at 1:15.

Well no ****. Way to miss the point by a mile.

It's almost like I noticed that and even addressed it in my post.

He still does imply Rocky improved, though to what extent he improved is the question. He does look much better against Charles and Moore than Walcott and Louis imo

I think Marciano IS underrated as a boxer mainly because people claim over and over that his boxing skills are trash-tier. Look, he's never going to be some Willie Pep type dude, but he did do a lot of little things that added up to him being awkward and not nearly as easy to tee off on as some folks make out. He managed to work out a style that allowed him to swing for the fences with the minimum amount of risk that he could manage, all night long.

Eh, not really, he looked fine enough to me last time I watched. Louis was in there not me but I can see that Marciano was still a fine fighter at the time, his defence was really good, touching someone is one thing but Marciano like LaMotta rolled with a lot of shots very subtly he didn’t try to avoid every jab that’s how you get a guy to throw his right hand and plant his feet…. I don’t try to take what opponents say too seriously when you can just watch the bout. Marciano in that fight was also only in his fourth year as a pro and also as a late starter, his career was only just under 8 years wasn’t it?

He does a lot of stuff that worked for James Toney, Toney himself mentions him alongside Walcott and Charles as the only heavyweights he respects from memory, Watch the way he dips off to his right, he’s too short to roll a right hand off his shoulder… so when you get dipping over the rear leg and there right is coming you pull your weight back to your rear foot and there punch is left reaching where your head used to be and you can counter (like you would using your shoulder) as your weights set, or you roll in by chasing your weight to the lead foot and hitting them with a right uppercut to the body thus taking the inside position. @Pat M you get what I’m saying yeah? You see Schemlimg doing similar against Louis (the reaching part)

A break down of an 18 second clip is too short?

Would you prefer a thorough break down about how bad Rocky looked in that fight?

It would be more accurate to say an inexperienced Rocky struggled with the fossil remains of Louis.

In everyone's defense, including @Glass City Cobra's, tone is sometimes hard to tell over the internet.

Things tend to escalate more quickly when it's just text, since it seems like some voiceless, faceless, inhuman text-generating void is crawling into your living room and disagreeing with you.
