How did weigh-ins work back then? I suspect boxers didn't manipulate with their weight so much as they do now and fought closer to their natural weight classes.

You know, somebody not long ago was calling me a racist for suggesting that Duran would have easily beaten Lomachenko at 135. First of all that's not Chenko's best weight, and second of all there is no chance that Bob Arum would put Lomachenko in with Duran. That would be homicide. He doesn't want to put him in with Berchelt or Paquiao. I have nothing against the guy, but my eyes work.

So yeah, guys fought more often, had better teachers, ate better and just, quite frankly, had more guts. Inside and outside of the ring. They looked to fight the best, and when they got in with them, they had a ridiculous amount of pride. Guys now are more like businessmen.

They weighed in around 10 in the morning or so for a fight that was going to go on at 10 in the evening.

Good stuff man glad someone has a brain! Duran would eat Spence alive! Duran moved up to middleweight and went toe to toe with Hagler and Iran Barkley, In my view most of the guys now wouldn't crack the top ten in the 80s back!

There was no drug testing for steroids in the 80’s. American athletes were roided to the gills. You dont need doctors to inject you with performance enhancing drugs. Trainers/nutritional experts could do that just fine. And dont even get me started on Exum wade, you soon to be banned moron.

It's not even much of a fight. Spence would barely land a punch on him.

looking back on the 80s i miss those fight 15 rounds at full pace in shape specimans like
    tony tubbs/greg page/snipes/coetzee/tex cobb/ evangalista/coopmans/ list 20 more

80s had some true ATG and only 2 belts / but i prefer 12 rounders to 15 rounders as fights were fought at a more conservative pace to save energy and could become very monotonous

one thing that was way way better than it is now
    fighters made 3 to 4 defenses a year /
IMO there should be some rule / unless a fighter is injured he must defend minumum of 3 times a year

saw dillian whyte interviewed the other day saying he was only given a 12 week training camp to get ready for a joshua fight and that it should be longer

    4 months ?????????????????

joshua will have had 9 months of his prime gone between povetkin and miller
most top tier figthers do the same .
duran from memory before that fight with leonard had already clocked up 70 fights
hagler had 50 before he became champ

british fighters used to have to clear out there domestic rivals/then commonwealth/then european before a title shot
now with dilution of belts /most top tier figthers dont face a tip 10 opponent until they fight for a world title
thats bull**** and where the 80s definatley was better.

maybe this? Reads like this should be right for a boxer who needs to make weight.
    https://www.steroid.com/Equipoise.php
"...It is not as powerful of a mass builder as testosterone, not even close, but the reduced estrogenic activity should allow the individual to make cleaner gains through supplementation...
...As a veterinarian steroid, Equipoise is well-known for its use in horses, hence the name “Equipoise” and its similarity to the word “Equestrian.” EQ is often given to horses in an effort to increase lean body weight, which is in part due to the steroid’s ability to increase appetite. An increased appetite is well noted among many performance enhancing athletes that use Equipoise, however, it doesn’t appear to affect everyone the same. Many who use the anabolic steroid report no increase in appetite, it tends to be highly individualistic, but it could be useful for those struggling to consume needed calories..."

I agree with your post for the most part, but Heavyweights were always a different breed. A few months ago we watched a 6-9 guy get a shot at the title, pitty pat his way to 20 punches round for 12 rounds, get off his back twice, and then whine loudly and longly about being robbed.

Whether Wilder even deserved the win is beyond the point IMHO, if you're going to run around spoiling and pitty patting with a 40 lb. weigt advantage, just be happy with the darn draw.

I saw a naturally larger and more skilled fighter in Duran beat a young Leonard who chose not to use all his advantages. Duran eased his way into the division properly as well. When Lomachenko said he would need at least a year to adjust to 140 for a potential Pacquiao fight he was hated on.
