I think the worst case of a late punch (that went unpenalized) I've seen was in the Maussa-Harris fight.
The funniest part in the Maussa-Harris is when Maussa tried to headbutt Harris at the end of the round (either 2 or 3). It was so blatant and obvious. Maussa needed some lessons on how to be a little bit subtle in his fouls. I'd say Lewis-Acey. Lewis hit Acey with two or three shots and all the ref did was warn him.
If a fighter is hit on the break or when down and he is unable to continue then a DQ is automatic. Clearly here the bone of contention is whether or not Dirrell could have continued. Dirrels reaction was extreme but I have seen stranger KO's. Remember when Chris Byrd was KO'ed by Ibeabuchi he was shouting and screaming saying he was fine and had not been knocked down as he couldn't even remember being KO'ed. It's quite clear to see the punch had plenty of power behind it. There was a complete follow through with the punch and Dirrels head was whipped right around. This blow does not compare to the other punches being landed by Pac and Margarito as these had little force behind them and their opponents had taken bigger punches prior to that final blow. The facts are that Dirrell was well ahead on points, he had not been hurt earlier in the fight and the punch was a flush power shot and clearly illegal. I will take the refs opinion, as he was closer to the action, over any opinion based upon what we THINK Dirrell could have done.
even if Dirrell was acting it out, I don't think AA would have gotten the win though.. bad way to win a fight imo
Dirrell had definately been hurt earlier in the fight. In round 10 he was even knocked down and looked clearly hurt.
He should have been suspended in the fight where they discovered the plaster of paris..Mosley I think..but the fight had to go on.Money..:smoke
They kept showing the late punch in slow motion, so lots of people were looking at it on the reply like here it comes, look how late he's throwing the punch! what a dirty ******* blah blah. But in actual speed it really wasn't that much of a drastically late punch. Yeah, he should have been disqualified because it was a late, but people are acting like it was the dirtiest thing they've ever seen in boxing. Give me a break.
I agree. It was a late punch, the DQ was justified, but it's not the dirtiest thing ever. When Abraham would get Dirrell cornered, he would try to tee off with hooks and straights, and got caught up in the heat of the moment when he let that punch go. I don't think he could hold back. But I don't he did it maliciously. It was a punch he just couldn't hold back on. But again, I do think he should have been disqualified. I thought the delayed reaction from Dirrell was odd, and all of his post fight antics were very weird. Some say he was hurt bad, others have accused him of faking it..... I'm not sure what to think about it.
EVERYONES BLAMING ABRAHAM ON SOME BULLSHIET HOW ABOUT BLAMING THE REF FOR NOT STEPPING IN WHEN DIRRELS KNEE WENT DOWN. IF THE REF DIDNT REACT TO THAT IN HALF A SECOND WHAT MAKES YOU THINK AA WOULD ESPECIALLY WHEN HE KNEW HE HAD HURT HIM IN THE 10th round AND WAS BEHIND ON THE SCORECARDS. STOP BITCHING AND BLAME THE REF FOR NOT DOIN HIS ****EN JOB.
