Have any of you recently re-watched Clottey vs Paquaio? As I sit here and watch I can't help but draw some comparisons and ideas in my head of how the upcoming fight with Mayweather may compare. Before we begin let's point out some differences. 1. Clottey came into the fight huge! Looks like a tank! He didn't allow a fight day weigh in. Looks to be easily 160-168. Much stronger than Floyd. 2. Clottey is much, much, more stationary. 3. His workrate is even lower than Floyd. Okay those are just a few of the bigger differences that jump out to you from the get go. So here's some of my questions based off of watching up to around the 10th rouhd now. 1. Clottey's turtle defense tactic worked really well in protecting him from major harm, however he lost every round because of it.He did have success throwing and connecting the few times he did let his hands go. But it almost seems like he was scared to do it for any prolonged period of time in fear of getting caught with something. Were Manny's shots hurting him? Why was he so scared to let his hands go? 2. Is that going to be factor with Mayweather? What I mean by that is he going to turtle up and go super defensive and pot shot all night once he realizes hey this guy throws way too much, way too fast, and you know what his shots do hurt? It's happened too many times in different fights where ive noticed fighters are afraid to really get into a toe to toe match with Manny because he's everywhere and his punches come from all angles, at varying speeds when and if you do let your hands go. Recently Tyson was the one to go on record and state that Floyd can't fight that way, at least not for the first half of the fight. If he doesn't earn Manny's respect he's going to get outworked. 3. What's the better match up for Manny? Clottey or Mayweather? Clottey is way stronger, and has IMO a better ability to block punches. But he is more stationary as I mentioned before. Sure Manny was able to box him to the decision but he had a hard time getting through. Where Im getting at is, is Mayweathers style going to be more open for Paquiao to land some punches and have success? Or was Clottey just inept for not taking the risk and going after Manny? It seems like a tough call considering thats what Manny wants, he wants you to brawl with him. 4. What do you guys who have re watched that fight think about how any of that is relevant to how the fight may play out? I can see Mayweather winning, I'm no Paquiao homer- I suppose what makes this fight so interesting is whats going to happen considering the clash of styles at play here. Is Mayweather going to be able to fight his fight, or is Paquiao's constant head movement, in and out approach going to frustrate him? Im torn as to what to expect. The more I ****yze and watch the more confused I become as to what's really going to happen May 2nd.
1. I don't think Manny's shots were hurting him much because that's only because Clottey has a very strong guard. The power and speed was enough that he was scared to let his hands go. Pacquiao also did fairly constantly change his angles which was forcing Clottey to reset quite a bit. 2. It "could" be a factor, but in the same way that Floyd catching Pacquiao with some straight right hands and slowing his offense down could be. We don't know for sure until they're in the ring together. Conservatively I think Pacquiao gets off to a good workrate start, Floyd takes over a bit in the middle rounds, then kinda coasts at the end and gets outworked again, but wins a close decision. 3. Clottey is a way better matchup for Manny than Floyd is. 4. The only thing to take away from the Clottey fight is that Manny threw an insane amount of punches that night, and I think he'll need to throw quite a lot to force the pace on Floyd. However, the Clottey fight does not mean much in the scheme of things.
I agree. The more I ****yze stylistically, the more I want to throw my hands up in the air and say, "Screw it! Idk and idc!" Sometimes I'll lean Floyd, sometimes I'll lean Manny. One thing I do know for sure, if Mayweather can't neutralize Pacquiao's pace & work rate early, he's probably going to have to knock him out. Pacquiao's work rate is so intense, so high, it's almost impossible to outpoint him. Especially if your offense is based off pot shots and timely counters. It's more accurate and prettier, but it won't win you the rounds on points against a guy like Pac.
Yeah that's very true, Id also add the heart disparity is huge. Clottey was demoralized. But maybe that credit should go to Paquiao? Holy *****, what a 11th round by Manny!
Well, what would be the ****ysis & predictions about the fight, but anyone can say something on time. Manny is fast & courageous and on the other hand Floyd is stronger and fast. Both of them will not allow anyone of them to win the bout easily. If the fight is decided soon then it will be very discouraging thing for viewers.
That fight really impressed me clottey is no joke came in like 165 and hits hard also has a iron chin for someone as small as pac to make clottey gun shy is nothing short of impressive remember how clottey put hurt on Judah?or maybe how clottey busted up cotto and got robbed? Clottey is bigger, stronger, hits harder than mayweather but not as skilful.
