Lampley is trash. He is consistently wrong in "predicting" the outcome of fights that are unfolding, he knows nothing about the more subtle aspects of fighting, and he looks like he knows nothing more about the sport now than when he started commentating ages ago (in fact, if anything, he looks like he's lost knowledge). The Margarito-Cotto fight exposed him badly. Every time Cotto opened up, it was "Look at that combination by Cotto!" Then Margarito would pin him on the ropes for a stretch and wail away, and Lampley would say nothing. Any fool could see that Margarito's punches, though less eye-catching, were doing more damage to Cotto and that Cotto was going to get broken down. But don't tell that to Lampley! That's not the first time Lamplass has showed his ignorance too. Look at Vince Phillips against Tszyu, or MA Barrera's first fight with Jr. Jones. Plus he consistently gets his facts wrong (ie: claiming Calzaghe was down in the 1st round against Eubank, when it was vice versa).
Lampley is the ****!! I'll miss him when he retires. He's improved with age. You could tell that he was an absolute boxing nube when he started and that he didn't seem to know much history. But now he's much more experienced. He's the glue that keeps the show going and he pumps the energy into the spectacular fights and knockouts. All you have to do is watch a Showtime fight and you'll usually wish that it was Lampley doing it, regardless of if it is good or now. Larry Merchant on the other hand, gets on my fukking nerves. At times he's good, but I've felt that for the past few years, he's just pissed on a few too many of Mayweather's and some other fighters parades. It's one thing to have a grudge about the downturn of boxing, but to belabor the point in his attitude and commentary consistently became kind of annoying. I'm glad he's gotten a bit better about this lately. I remember that for a while there Jim Lampley was even getting pissed off at him and knock him down a few notches off his pedestal with a sharp comment or two. And don't get me started on those MOTHERFUKKING PUNS!!! I roll my eyes whenever I know one's coming. You can't blame him for trying to hold on to his days as a hotshot boxing writer, but sometimes they're really lame. It is kind of funny, though, when he does a lame pun and Lampley has to smile back at Larry and do a segueway even though you can see the sarcasm on his face.
Definitely. Foreman was the **** because he was like Emmanuel Steward in their analytical skills, except with much more energy, so as to complement Jim Lampley's energy. They kept the boxing really lively. What else is he supposed to do, quote Shakespeare? It's not like the textual quoting of what he said is equivalent to how exciting it was when he did it live watching the fight. If you don't like the guy, you don't like the guy, that's fair, but that's his job as a color commentator, to describe what's happening in the fight. In my opinion, he maks the KOs more exciting.
Lampley's 12th round call of Pac-Morales one gave me chills. Lampley- "Why in the world would Morales switch south paw? Talk about going into the jaws on a lion!" Merchant- "This is a picture that doesn't need captions" Lampley- "Guys there is nothing like boxing and there are no athletes like fighters." Merchant- "You can call this March gladness." Lampley- "Absolutely!" There's nowhere else in sports where you'll find GREATER PASSION!, GREATER INTENSITY!, GREATER COURAGE!, GREATER COMMITMENT!, GREATER SHEER GUTS THAT WHAT THESE TWO GUYS ARE SHOWING YOU! THIS IS BOXING AT IT'S BEST!"
Don`t you guys actually get the feeling that Lampley actually likes and respects the fighters he is covering? His enthusiasm consistently comes through. He is kind of raw and real when he calls it. Much more enjoyable than watching Jim Grey and his condescending manner in which he speaks to the fighters. I think Lampley builds up the moment, and he truly enjoys his job. Very little cynicsm, kind of the positive presence that boxing needs...
Jim Watt and Lampley are more or the less the same. A serious and humourless approach to commentating. There needs to be another Merchant who has cracked some hilarious one-liners over the years.
Jim Lampley has some of the best lines in boxing history. Lately, though, he seems more like a fanboy with a microphone than a play by play guy. While I've never been a huge fan, I used to find him entertaining; now I just find him annoying.
He is still good at what he does he's just on repeat mode now. Same format every fight. Id like to hear more of Lewis and Judah if not that great was pretty funny covering the Lundy fight.
Lampley is very good. Great voice and exciting. Kellerman knows his stuff but is kind of a smug dick-he doesn't respect the fighters enough. Merchant is everyone's favorite drunk uncle. Might as well keep him around. Larry Merchant: (in drunken slur) "well he's still Cassius Clay to me Jim...ugh"
