I was watching Pacquiao/De La Hoya last night, again, for the 898th time, and I noticed that De La Hoya seemed to be getting through here and there, moreso on this viewing than those previous.

De La Hoya landed at least one right hand lead that seemed to be on the bottom of Manny's chin, which caused Oscar to momentarily leap at Manny with a flurry, which gave the impression that De La Hoya thought he had Manny hurt. But he didn't. At All.

It looked like a pretty good right hand, although I cannot confirm precisely where it landed on Manny's chin because of the angle, even at 1/16th speed.

De La Hoya's physical condition may affect how some people consider the overall question, but as I said, to me it appeared to be a pretty good shot, and Oscar must have thought so as well, based on his reaction.

(The right hand is not Oscar's best punch - I know. Let's not waste our time there.)

Theorizing, how would you rate Manny's ability to take punches north of Lightweight?

    Also:

    A) Roughly how many 'flush' punches did you see De La Hoya land?

    B) Roughly how many 'contact' punches did you see De La Hoya land?

    C) What did you make of Pacquiao's stuctural resistance to those punches?

i remember quite clearly that right hand. Oscar loaded up on it and it landed right on the button. Pac definately felt that shot but he took it well and moved his feet.

i said it before and i still stand by it, after 2 rounds or so, oscar pulled his punches. whether it be out of frustration or even devious reason, i know not. the guy threw only a handful of punches with any zing on them. in the 7th round, he was cornered and getting pummeled, manny backs off and oscar slips out to his left. for some odd reason, oscar grabs the rope and puts himself right back in the corner to get wailed on some more.
in the eighth, it looks like he somewhat made a comeback attempt. once again, he was punching half contact and manny let him hit him. he even raised his guard too high so that oscar could score. the ten second warning sounds manny's ON switch is flipped, and oscar again corners himself, only to be rewarded with a furious flurry from pac.
now i know oscar has said that he didnt have it anymore and he was secretly hoping pac would knock him out and put him out of his misery, but this **** is a bit fishy to me.
excuse my rant, and i cant tell if manny can take a serious punch above 135, no ones really hit him yet.

I agree to some extent. Watching that fight closely live, to me it looked as though De La Hoya clearly took his foot of the gas at a certain point. Humiliation had to have something to do with that. The vibe was self pity, and hoping others would feel sorry for him. He stopped trying. Although, when PH|LLA says that Oscar loaded up on that shot I agree with him. It didn't appear as though he pulled the punch we're discussing from the 4th round. I don't think it hurt Pacquiao one bit, however.

we can only speculate. but also, oscars right has never really been the "show stopper" so we wont know the answer to your question until may 2nd.

yeah and im sure pac is very accustomed to nullifying the left seeing as hes done it 2 camps in a row. who knows, hatton might not even lay a finger on him, just like de la.

The real question here is, how would you rate manny's ability to take a punch north of Super Featherweight. Diaz did not test him, and irrespective of maybe one half assed right hand that the weight drained Oscar managed to land, neither did he.

Hatton will answer this question for us on May 2nd.
