Great, great fighter. Great use of distance, timing, and accuracy. Not the fastest fighter (hand or foot), but a rangy jab, subtle head movement, beautiful left uppercut. I love his ability to manuever his opponent through economical movement and slipping into the perfectly timed right hand at 2:35 seconds of the first video... this is Arguello in a nutshell. On top of all of this, class in and out of the ring. :good [yt]7-MIPPi2eZw[/yt] And for the Spanish speakers. (no footage here) [yt]w9EwNMN9CLQ&feature=related[/yt]
one of my all time favs. i stand by my claim that arguello, along with pbf, is unbeatable at 130 lbs. i'll take floyd in a 12 rounder, but ill go with arguello over 15 rds.
We used to love watching Arguello on TV back in the early eighties, I remember him knocking out Billy Costello, one good shot and Costello was all but done. Arguello would methodically set his guys up patiently then deliver the KO shot. He was also one of the classiest men to ever enter the ring. I will always remember Alexis one of the true All Time greats.
he was an artist. very methodical, never in a hurry. just a great fighter. and i agree the best 130 i had the privelege to watch.
Pryor showed that a high paced battle with unorthodox punches from all angles gave Arguello trouble. Maybe Arguello wasn't at his prime weight when sharing a ring with Pryor, but even in his prime he would always have had trouble with a similar style to Pryor's. Arguello's style was all about timing, leverage, precision, and patience. Pryor denied him the space and slow/medium tempo for those weapons to be effective. At times Arguello did have success, as Pryor's defense was wide open, but he never got into the kind rhtyhm he usually did against other opponents.
Yes thats true. But its worth saying that it was a rare combination which Pryor posessed in those fights--- in addition to his high volume attack, unorthodox punches, and angles, he was also a madman on a mission with a Haggler (Hearns edition) type determination to walk through hell to get his man. Then there was the black bottle from the first fight to top it off. That Pryor was hard for even Pryor to duplicate.
Please don't react to this troll. Let the thread continue unhindered, even in the face of idiocy. :good
