A very good boxer and thats it, not a great and definetly not an all time great. You have to be very good to stay unbeaten in 40 + fights.

For me there are roughly 5 levels of fighters

1.Great fighters-Mayweather and Pacquiao-the only 2 I have seen that I considere "great". I haven't been a boxing fan for very long, so can't comment on the likes of a peak RJJ or peak Hopkins since I haven't seen enough of their fights.

2.Very good fighters-MAB, Calzaghe, JMM, Hatton, current Hopkins etc

3.Good fighters-Amir Khan, Current RJJ, Jeff Lacy, David Diaz

4.Average fighters/bums- Everyone that Amir Khan has beaten

5.Super bums-the dude MAB just fought

To be a "great" you have to seperate yourself from the "very good" by beating them. Floyd has beaten Hatton, De La Hoya, Corrales, Castillo etc so he has achieved this. Pacman has beaten Barrera, Morales and MAYBE Marquez (I gave the second fight to Marquez by a point but either way it was close and can be argued). Pacman has also moved up to lightweight to and then Welterweight. Yes Diaz is not a great opponent but is a lot better than people give him credit for, yes DLH looked weight drained but still one hell of an achievement for a guy who started at what, 106 lbs?

Calzaghe is not a great because he has been fighting "average" fighters his whole career in Wales and untill a few years ago, was not even famous in the UK. How long did it take for him to unify the division? crazy! Jeff Lacy was nothing more than "good" and overhyped, same with Kessler. A peak RJJ may have been a "great" but the current RJJ is just "good". B-hop is the only "very good" fighter that Calzaghe has beaten and that result was very arguable and opinions are still divided. Many in the British press even thought Hopkins did enough to win.

I mean, Pac beats Diaz and its no big deal but Calz beats Lacy and its a "career defining fight". Can you seriously say that beating Lacy is much more of an achievement than beating David Diaz"?

So Calzaghe has MAYBE beaten ONE "very good" fighter, in Hopkins, 4 "good" fighters in Lacy, Kessler, old man RJJ and Eubank and the rest consist of "average/bums". Therefore he has not achieved what Floyd and Pacman have and cannot be considered "great".

Like I said, he's one hell of a fighter cuz you would have to be to stay unbeaten in as many fights as he has and even to be able to hang with a 43 yo Hopkins. An "average" or "good" fighter would have been humiliated by Hopkins so he's better than that but not a "great".:nono Anyway there's my two cents................... as if anyone cares:yep

Well, at least it made feel better to write this essay.

He is/was a good boxer. Not great. He benefits from a weak division in a week era.

One day Joe Calzaghe will be celebrated the world over as a great. Wales has a smaller population than a small state and no one from over the pond can find a compliment. John Cleese was right. in the uk we only go down on one knee for our supreme leader. we speak ENGLISH not american and when if have a world series we invite other coutries to take part
