Lampley's man-crush on Barrera was cringe-inducing. I doubt he said that to be offensive, he just got so caught up in the moment and was happy that his man-crush was winning that he tried to say something that would sound cool. He was so over-the-top that he actually spelled out Barrera's name. One time he said on the air "no disrespect to you Roy, but Barrera's the smartest boxer I've ever met". He sounded like he was ready to beat up his girlfriend again, so angry, when Jay Nady didn't rule the KD in Marquez-Barrera. It took him about 5 replays to finally admit that Barrera hit Marquez when he was down.
I've never heard Lampley go on "tangents" exactly... I mean, maybe I have, but it's not like BANG one tangent BANG BANG there's two more tangents, let's have a constant BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG!
Lampley had a domestic abuse charge or something like that from a girlfriend. His own ex-wife said he never laid an unkind hand on her when they were married and she was sure it was blown out of proportion or something. I think. Or, maybe he is a wife-beater. I don't think so though.
Never knew that. I would be surprised. He seems like an upstanding professional, even if he does get a bit emotional from time to time.
I gotta say, it's not easy for me to picture the same guy who got choked up when they showed Cotto's family in the audience toward the end of the Margo fight going around beating his girlfriend. It just doesn't seem to fit. Whereas I can perfectly picture Ferdie Pacheco...No, never mind. This isn't funny, I'll stop. I started out serious. Please note.
Lampley used to dig at George all the time ... let's face it, George was a pretty bad announcer and was there for celebrity, not talent ... Lampley seemed at times to not be able to stomach having to share air time with him ... however a funny thing happened after the first Bowe / Golata fight ... When all hell broke loose and anarchy was running wild at the Garden without the police , fat, jolly George became Big George Foreman and saved Lampley's ass when hoods were going to go after him ... you actually catch some of it on the audio when Foreman is telling some kids to stay back ... all of a sudden he was George of the Fifth Ward again and the crowd stayed away from the HBO Team who without George would have been pummelled ... we did not see Lampley again for about 15 minutes . When he went back on air from a secure point in the Garden and resumed coverage of the fiasco ... he was highly emotional, almost in tears as he was thanking George Foreman for staring down the mob ... from that telecast on Lampley backed the fu-k off and somehow discovered a tolerance for George he never previously displayed ...
"I don't think you like him much yourself" - George "I like him fine, I have no problem with Nass" - Jim "You said some things I don't think you like the guy you should be helping yourself" - George lol
An interview after George and HBO parted ways is on youtube. There, the guy asks Lampley a handful of questions and right at the end of the video, tail end, he says "Do you miss working with George Foreman?" and Lampley says with absolutely zero hesitation "No."
