I don't remember if this one was posted recently or not but I find this an interesting match up .. Baer matches Foreman in height and reach .. in shape they are within a few pounds of each other .. Baer, with his huge right and under rated left hook ( see he shot he crushed Kingfish Levinsky with ) and his terrific chin and better hand speed might have very well had the style to finish off what Ron Lyle started ... I'm no huge Baer fan and feel many would out box him but other than the best Louis ever, no one ever went through him ...
This would be a bad one for George. IMO, Max would have finished what the much slower, plodding Lyle started. Max by KO.
I hadn't run this one through my mind before and was surprised when I came to the same conclusion. Max would land and the more rounds it would go the more frequent they would hit home. I can't see Foreman reaching the last round.
Really?? Foreman was a much better boxer than the crude Maxie, who lost most of his 13 fights when prime or near so. I would give him a chance against rusty/layoff Foreman against Lytle, that is it. Foreman had a great jab, put pounches together well, cut the ring...
No doubt Baer froze against Louis but it was Joe's speed, power and combination punching that did it .. Foreman was no where as fast or as sharp .. here is an interesting film, an exhibition of Baer v.s. Levinsky, a heavyweight with his own iron chin .. it was supposed to be a soft spar but the Kingfish tried to surprise Baer by surprise and Baer , losing his cool as he rarely did after tragic results , really lets loose in the second round and it is pretty devastating .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8Xh4WUGq24
No it wasn't, Baer started to hyperventilate coming out of the dressing room. He was an emotional mess before he climbed into the ring. Dempsey, working his corner had to physically threaten him, to get him to fight.
They say that Levinsky wasn't the sharpest tack in the pack and getting Maxie to the boiling point in an exhibition would seem to prove it. George showed that against a come in puncher like Lyle he could be way open and if a taller Max started winging them like this Foreman would get hurt. Foreman would also be hitting paydirt so it would be a great bout. On a side note I wonder how much better Max could have been with a methodical trainer like Blackburn?
I've always felt this was an even fight and really prime vs. prime, I don't think Foreman was a better fighter. Foreman was better managed, that's it.
Foreman had a much better fighting mentality, and this would likely be the deciding factor. Foreman was perhaps a little better technically, but probably not in such a way as to give him a key advantage. In terms of chin, I would give the edge to Baer. Baer had significantly better stamina, and would likely win if it went past a certain point. I am picking Foreman, but I am not ruling Baer out.
No that close. Foreman busts him up and stops him in about the 6th round. Better jab, greater physical strength and -dare I say it- better technique.
