Maybe I did not write it clear .. I meant Louis' skills did the damage but he possessed a highly unusual skill set and was at his absolute best for that fight .. I understand Baer had a panic attack before entering the ring .. my point was that Foreman was not Louis and Baer matches up pretty well against him ..
One thing I am convinced of is that after a spell boxing science will fly out of the window and this will be a pier six brawl. Baer is so awkward and open to counters, that I think he will drag Foreman into a shootout. I''d favour Big George, but yes, this is an interesting matchup.
So? Neither did Baer until Joe Louis gave him the beating of a life time. I stand by my comment. Later in his career, Baer didn't quit when Nova beat his head in and cut him to ribbons. How one reacts to a thrashing from history's most lethal puncher is not going to be a defining character moment. How do we know he was fully capable of getting up and continuing? He took a bad beating and a horrible right cross just prior, he was messed up. You want me to trash talk on Baer's behalf? Ok, Baer never saw god after getting beat up and dropped by a feather duster. http://static.boxrec.com/wiki/1/18/Jimmy_Young_vs._George_Foreman_._Fasan.jpg
interesting match-up, this fight is nothing short of a shootout and IMO Max was a better fighter/puncher than Lyle both could be out-boxed but Max hit harder than Lyle with one shot...Foreman had brutal power but was not as tight in defense of as quick in combo as the Brown Bomber and he was also much easier to hit. I think I would give Max a great shot to come out ahead, he had a concrete chin and better stamina than George 1 and would be the hardest puncher George faced in career 1 but which Max shows up that night is a factor....any mans fights
Long enough to see God. A unique circumstance against a unique opponent. Deciding he had enough after taking a beating from Joe Louis that would have likely put most men six feet under isn't a guage to contrast Baer and Foreman anymore than Foreman seeing God against Young is. I stand by my comment.
I've always felt Foremans 'god' comments after Young were a charade. Foreman simply couldnt accept another loss so he quit, ala Tyson-Holyfield 2. Foreman was mentally RUINED after RITJ, he was never the same and the Young fight just pushed him over the edge. Just look at him after the Ali fight, the video where Foreman fought 5 men in one night just to show he had good stamina etc etc, Foreman was mentally very fragile in his first career (after Ali)
I believe that to be case. Well, I don't think he was mentally ruined by Ali. He could have easily quit against Lyle but battered his way back into that fight and took the victory. I do think it weighed on him when he first quit after Young, however. I only brought up the "God" comment in response to McVey's apparent disapproval of my comment that Baer and Foreman are evenly matched, citing Baer not rising after his third knockdown against Louis. That was uncharacterstic of Baer and shouldn't be used to measure him against Foreman. I think if Foreman met that version of Louis, he would likely meet a similiar fate. Baer was the toughest of the tough, never been down, but Louis was beating his head in, who can say how another fighter would react to such a situation?
Foreman inside 6. Sure Max has a chance, but not a very good one IMO. If he gets past the halfway stage he may well stop Foreman as he'd likely have excerted the majority of energy trying to finish Max off
