Tucker was the best fighter a Peak Tyson fought. A slightly past peak Tyson wasn't even able to go the distance with Douglas..
I dont rate Tony Tucker highly. But he was a contender at the time, as was Douglas. But they often -very often - put in mediocre performances. As did McCall. Oliver McCall did not impress me has a top-flight fighter. I'm not going to change my opinion on him. He was tough, well-conditioned, with a good punch. But he was also a typical lacklustre lethargic heavy, and his boxing skills were ordinary at best. He scored a one punch TKO over Lewis, to his credit. He also got outboxed by Frank Bruno and struggled with a flabby 45 year old Larry Holmes. That was his level, that was his peak. Spin it anyway you want, McCall was not outstanding.
Well Marciano is known for coming on strong, Walcott was beating the beezer's out of Marciano, and nearly had the Rock going in round 11, but yet Marciano came back strong and won the fight. That is one abilty of Marciano I wont count out. Marciano will be just as stronger or STRONGER in this case than the last 2 foes Foreman fought. And the last guy was chopping away at Foreman in rounds 2 and 3.
Who in gods name is claiming that he's "outstanding"? I'm arguing that the claim that he's medicore is ridiculous. That monikor fits a thousands other boxers far better.
Marciano-Walcott I was not close in a scoring sense but competitive nonetheless. Jersey Joe was getting the better of the Rock but what he was dishing out was managable to the extent that it did not exceed Marciano's threshold for pain. Look at Joe Frazier, look at the beating he was taking from Muhammad Ali in "Thrilla." I'm certain that he was hit more times in that fight than both of the Foreman fights combined. But for some reason he couldnt weather the storm against George whereas he took Ali to hell in a competitive but not close fight. IMO it won't be any different for Marciano as he faces George who would be only too eager to take him out. Marciano lacks the handspeed to get his shots off early enough to keep George on the backfoot. His come forward offense will only accelerate the process and won't allow him to handle more than a few rounds of George Foreman. Even if he does manage to get to the late rounds, he won't be unscathed, he'd be hurt- possibly cut and IMO he won't have enough left to get the job done despite his superhuman showings against Walcott and Charles.
Well, it's all relative. Obviously the context is within a conversation about the leading ranked fighters of entire eras. A handful of names were put forward to represent the cream of the division for whole decades. As an alleged leading ranked fighter within an era, a decade, McCall is, IMO, mediocre, average, ordinary.
Thats assuming that Marciano could get to the later rounds. Just saying Marciano has shown time and time again that he comes on strong in the late rounds, no matter how badly he was beat up on in the early rounds. Fraizer show the same thing vs Ali, and other people also. He just didnt get into the late rounds is all. Had it been a 6 man thing for Forman, and Fraizer was the last guy comeing into the ring for that contest, I think Fraizer would have finshing a punch out Foreman, and guessing if Fraizer EVER did make it pass 6 or 7 rounds, Fraizer's late round out put would be too much for Foreman imo. The thing is, Fraizer and Marciano need to get out of the early rounds to do this.
I think prime Foreman and Marciano has about the same level of hand speed base on the films. Nothing to big between them.
