As someone who only started watching boxing about 10 years ago and having to rely on youtube for a lot of my education on boxing history i figured i would ask some more knowledgeble posters.

I have watched said fight a few times now and im rather confused on the stoppage.
At the time was Chuvalo not known yet for his chin or were there some other circumstances around this fight?

Because unless im missing something at the time of the stoppage Chuvalo did not seem hurt at all, he was punching back and having his guard up.
Actually watching it from the start i saw Chuvalo ripping Foreman to the body hard from round 1 which really made me wonder how Foreman would cope in the later rounds.

Was this stoppage seen as controversial in any way and if so why was there no rematch?
I know Chuvalo famously asked the Ref if he was nuts for stopping it.

    Thanks in advance.

Chuvalo was actually on the decline at the time of this fight, playing gate keeper to up and comers. His tough reputation had already been well established.

It was just a premature stoppage. Happens. It wasn't a popular decision by the ref and I recall some "booing."

Chuvalo was actually doing ok against George, not a bad fight.

I listened to the fight broadcast live on radio. At the time of stoppage, there was some controversy about it being stopped early. Chuvalo himself was upset by it, saying that he "most definitely would" ask for a rematch. Chuvalo was certainly well known for his ruggedness by that time. But by the time of the Foreman match, he was considered a gatekeeper of the heavyweight division - if someone could get past Chuvalo, he was considered a bona fide contender. Coming off his lackluster performance against Gregorio Peralta the previous February, his third round stoppage of Chuvalo was a big victory for Foreman. Foreman was on his way, and his camp probably did not want to risk a rematch, there being little to gain. There may not have been much demand for a rematch - $$$ being the bottom line. I'll have to watch the fight in order to comment on whether or not I think it should have been stopped when it was.

If you would not mind, its only 3 rounds as you say.... Chuvalo took some hard shots for sure but he did not seem hurt at all in my eyes.

I just watched the fight on YouTube. Yeah, probably stopped a bit prematurely altho Chuvalo seemed headed for defeat. He had thrown a punch at Foreman just before the stoppage, so it probably could have gone on a while longer. Don Dunphy, the announcer, said that Chuvalo's manager was on his way into the ring to stop it.

Chuvalo was taking way too many punches for his own good. OK stoppage - it was sickening to watch.

Watch from around 8:10 of the video when Big George rocks smaller George.

After that, there were about thirty bombs landed from Foreman against three shots thrown by Chuvalo. And finally, Chuvalo's corner called it quits.

    Agreed 100%.

I think if that was anyone other than Chuvalo there wouldn't be any "controversy" at all about the stoppage.

It's mainly because of Chuvalo's "reputation" that what few people who dispute that stoppage do so.

Where are the WAY TOO MANY punches? Yeah, Foreman landed a big left hook, but it's not as if Chuvalo was in serious danger. His hands were up and he was still moving his head.

I talked to George about this fight and even though it happened years ago, it bothers him almost as much as the Terrelll fight. Chuvalo was landing some good body shots against George and said he was already breathing heavy at the time of the stoppage. He was throwing back shots too.

    That's just Pastor George bull****.

    He was dominating.

Chuvalo was being hammered and taking unnecessary punishment. He had nothing for Big George.

You appear to have the wrong end of the stick here, Terror.

round15 wasn't referring to 'Pastor' George but George Chuvalo.

And Anyone who watches the video showing thirty or so unanswered punches, some of them bombs, and takes into account that the Chuvalo corner were calling for the stoppage and climbing into the ring, knows it was a good stoppage.

I don't think it was a bad stoppage , it was a massacre and Chuvalo was totally uncompetitive .

Chuvalo had a chin, but also take into consideration Foreman's strength. To let a man sit in a corner and take abuse from George Foreman in the hopes of winning a boxing match is mixed up priorities at best.

Chuvalo was well known for his chin.

    Chuvalo was badly hurt.

Chuvalo was getting hit with tremendous shots from an all time great puncher.

The ref did a terrific job. He likely saved Chuvalo's life. To call it a premature stoppage because Chuvalo was not pounded out cold is to not know the sport. The same people would cry in outrage if Chuvalo ended up like Kid Paret which he very well could have ..
