George got rocked in the first round. Cooney's corner remarked to him you hurt him, youre doing ok stay off the ropes etc. George really wanted to make a statement, and those awkard angle punched caught Cooney, simple as that. After he went down he was done for. Definitely needed a couple tuneups before facing arguably the heaviest hands in the division. Shame Cooney went out like that in his last fight, but thats boxing. Look what Cooney did to a shot Norton, what goes around comes around. From what Ive heard Georges comeback was legit after this win people took him seriously after the 20 cans he rolled over with little or moderate difficulty. Prime Cooney vs this Foreman would have been more competitive, but I believe Foreman still stops him.
I agree with the one or two guys on this thread who said that he was in better shape both physically and mentally for the Foreman fight than he was for Spinks. Against Spinks, he showed up looking as though he hadn't trained a day and was about as interested as going to the proctologist's office. Gil Clancy did a good job of preparing him and he turned up around 230 while appearing to be focussed for the brief period he lasted. The first round was a good one for Cooney. I can remember being impressed with the footwork and left jab he was employing, leaving me to believe that he had some boxing ability and wasn't just the mindless seek and destroyer that he's often made out to be.
I remember some fight, forget which, and they had Gil Clancy as the analyst. This was a couple of weeks just before the bout and of course Gil was in Cooney's corner for the fight. So talk about the fight swung around, and someone said 'Big George' to which Gil replied "Ohh no, no, he's going to be little George in this fight." I think Clancy worked very hard with Cooney, and you could see how disappointed he was after the fight.
Well at the time no one knew how to perceive Foreman .. he was active .. he was improving but he was also fighting carefully selected guys .. a lot thought Cooney would take him and then move on to a big money Tyson bout .. George proved very smart though .. he also gave the funniest post fight interview I ever saw at the time but have not been able to find anywhere .. which I could ..
The proper way to say that expression is: " Call me anything you want, just don't call me LATE for dinner."
Cooney looked like he was having a nervous meltdown here. And Foreman looked as mean as they come. Refusing to sit down between rounds must of been some intimidation factor. Must of been a scary sight seeing George standing over there staring at you ready to club your lights out.
Call me crazy, the Foreman of the COONEY fight tests Tyson's chin in 1990. Prob loses to Tyson who was hungry and lets be honest quite scary in the ring. George even in his comeback under the nice guy act had a mean streak in the ring, this has been one of my fave Foreman fights for years. The antitechnique of those awkward shots is truly difficult to deal with. I believe more than a few fighters in the division were looking at George with respect and even fear. Im about to make a Bruno vs comeback George thread later, dont recall one. That hookercut is so ugly but beautiful
Can you imagine if this George fought Tyson from the Douglas fight? He would have messed him up so bad the Buster beating would be tame by comparison.
Cooney did appear to be in better shape and mentally focused for big George that night. That version of Gerry would've done better against Spinks than the zombie that showed up and got KOed by Michael. The problem for Gerry that night was he couldn't keep Foreman off of him. George kept coming forward no matter what Cooney threw at him and Gerry looked scared...not in a cowardly way but in a desperate though valiant way. He tried very hard and landed some good shots but I sensed it was just a matter of time before George lowered the boom on Gerry...and when he did that was all she wrote.
