Foreman vs Lyle is probably my favourite, but also probably one of the most akward fights ever.....

It's quite the education, my friend.

Might want to watch Liston-Machen sometime too (if you haven't already). That fight showcases more skills than Liston's detractors would care to admit. Great watch.

He didn't just do that swing once, that is why it was weird as hell

Greatest pier 6 brawl ever. Just raw power and heart. Foreman nearly threw all of his skill out the window, but toughed it out after taking a lot of brutal blows that would have knocked out a lot of guys. Defense nearly absent. Toughness, heart, power, and yes, superior conditioning won it for him. Overall, a wild and amazing all-time classic slugfest. Ron Lyle learned that you can’t out punch George; you can only outbox him.

Where would you fellas rank it if you were listing the most entertaining HW fights of that decade? Taking outer-ring impact out of it (Zaire for instance, was a huge fight but not terribly entertaining purely as a fight)?

As someone once described it "The most two sided fight ever seen"

I just got through re-watching it. Foreman showed some heart alright, wow. He ended the fourth round flat on his face & arose like a zombie, then spent most of the fifth round getting pole axed, until Lyle simply ran completely out of steam.

Boxing News ranked it in their Top 5 Fights of the 1970s. Quite justifiably too.

He comes out with that enormous sweeping swing for each of the first three rounds. I’d love to know if someone ever asked him about it. Foreman should’ve been ready to capitalise on it instead of just effortlessly sidestepping by the third time LOL. That punch made Foreman look like Pernell Whitaker.

You can outpunch George is what that fight taught me. But Lyle Gassed, if he had 1 or 2 more rounds he would have won. You could tell by that sloppy kermit the frog routine George did in the corner before the fight was stopped that he was just as tired if not more tired than he was in Zaire

There is so many weird things that happened in the 70s. I just watched Ali's fight with Frazier in Manilla, the second round is so bizarre. All Ali does is just put his glove on Joe's face, doesn't throw a punch for like half the roudn, throws 1 right hand, then just does it for the rest of the round and I'm thinking "These guys are literally just effing around, why?"

To be fair to Foreman, the second round was stopped a full minute early, when he had Lyle in moderate trouble against the ropes.

It was weird how Lyle was pretty much knocked out int he 2nd round, then he just runs to the ropes and George stands there going "duuuuuuuuuuuur"
