Foreman vs Lyle is probably my favourite, but also probably one of the most akward fights ever.....

I read the literature on many fights before I got to see the actual fights in question.

When I finally got to watch Foreman vs Lyle, it fell somewhat short of what I had read about it - over exuberant writers to blame, perhaps?

On the other hand, while the Liston-Williams fights were afforded credit to be excellent slugfests, when I was finally availed of the actual vision, they exceeded the impression I gained from the literature, by a good margin.

I’d rate the latter two fights as better than Forman vs Lyle.

I’d put Lyle vs Shavers ahead also - the film quality for that fight isn’t the best but the brutal exchanges can still be well appreciated.

Was Lyle on some sort of Death Wish fighting Shavers then Foreman just 4 months apart?

Of course Ron ultimately fought the top 3 punchers of the era (add Cooney).

Off the top, Ken Norton and Jimmy Young also managed that not so desirable trifecta (and add Lyle himself to Young’s resume).

Gotta give Jimmy his dues, he didn’t avoid the big punchers and in fact did very well against them, including second tier puncher Norton.

Of course, Jim was well past his best vs Cooney, but even when getting belted with an horrendously cut eye imparting his vision, he did not go down - and he was perhaps also the unfortunate victim of one of Gerry’s sharpest and most intelligent performances, Cooney’s jab notably very much on point in that fight.

That sucks, I hope it wears off soon Champ. ****ing hangovers hit harder as you get older...and they last longer. I avoid them like the plague now. :D

It is pretty cartoonish but proved just what a monster puncher Lyle was when he could land … twice Foreman looks done but survives … I always found the ending more of Lyle collapsing from exhaustion than what look like Foreman’s slow motion arm shots … George was some man child back then , so unsophisticated from what he’d become from his kamikaze loss to Ali to the Toronto circus to selecting Lyle as a comeback opponent to knowing Jimmy Young’s style well but agreeing to fight him in a tropical climate. It’s amazing this man managed to grow up and comeback as George 2 … the growth is his greatest achievement.

    Correct.

I'm African American myself, and would never use such a word.

I have watched the fight over a dozen time (+ live). What strikes me is Foreman's total lack of muscle definition. I remember Cosell and Norton stating how much better Foreman's condition is than his last outing (the charade in Canada), but George didn't look right to me.

He didn't fight right either. He had PTSD so I can't really blame him
